After knee replacement surgery

Posted by beatricefay @beatricefay, Jun 16, 2016

Had left knee replaced 9 days ago. Right knee two years ago. Having a problem with inflammation so hard to bend knee and exercise. Trying to ice and raise knee above heart. Doctor suggested getting compression hose. Anybody have this experience and can offer suggestions. So tired all the time from pain interrupting my sleep and painkillers. My insurance refused to pay for the painkiller recommended by surgeon so have to take one with more opiates. That's frustrating. Two years ago it was covered but now too expensive for me to use. Seems the drug companies, not our doctors are determining what we use.

Hi - new here. To make a long story short, I'm a 54 year old female who had a running injury spiral into a total knee replacement in March 2018. I recently had an illness that planted me on the couch for 5 days and it has become very evident that the swelling & pain I have been complaining about since March gets significantly worse when weight bearing. Has anyone else had swelling and pain this far out from surgery and if so, what whas the cause?

going on 6 years from operation and still have swelling and pain. I do more biking than walking and that helps with pain. IF i had know i would never have had the operation. Second knee i did stem cells and i am happy with the results.
The cause is unknown. Surgeon had no idea of what to do, so i put up with it, ice is what i do. I use no pain pills.

@cobweb I had a friend who put up with a serious amount of pain for two years, until she got a second opinion. The new doctor found the problem and fixed it, and now she is so much better. Have you tried getting the opinion of a different orthopedic surgeon? It is possible that someone else may be able to find the problem. No one should have to put with that much pain for so long after a TKR.

Congratulations on your the great success with your knee replacement, @contentandwell. You should be a poster child for TKR! It sounds like you have had some great surgeons who have excellent technique with this type of surgery.

@hopeful33250 my second surgeon is positively great. I had hoped to have the TKR in 2013, prior to my cirrhosis diagnosis, but as I lay there waiting to go into surgery, IV in my hand, the surgeon came to me and told he couldn't do it because my platelets were too low, which is a symptom of cirrhosis.
Initially when I had been in his waiting room there were people from other parts of the country there to go to him, he has such a great reputation. For some reason on his info it did not say that he was certified so I didn't use him for my first TKR. He is of course, just did not include that info.

I'm scheduled for a total knee replacement surgery on April 5th and have been doing pre-op exercises for 3+ months along with my daily morning wake up routine. I ran across an application that runs on a smartphone to help with prehab and rehab - Peerwell -- https://www.peerwell.co/. Has anyone used this app on your phone or tablet?

I have an appointment with my primary doc tomorrow who has to give approval for the surgery (hopefully) and am planning to ask him about it. It looks like it costs $49 which is not bad if it helps or provides more tips for the rehab. I'm always a little skeptical of these things but it seems like a good idea.

@johnbishop I haven't heard of peerwell but I am curious, if you are on Medicare why do you need approval from your PCP? I never needed that. I did check with my transplant team and they changed my immunosuppressant because one tends to retard healing, then I was switched back a month or two after the TKR.

@contentandwell, The surgeon's PA told me I need to have an OK to do the surgery from my PCP. I'm guessing he's relying on the PCP that I'm healthy enough to have the surgery done.

@johnbishop Gotcha, so not a referral. That's understandable. I just never ask my PCP about anything, but I do check with my transplant department.

@johnbishop - Hi John, I'm with JK - I haven't heard of this one. My ortho doctor had me do in-home PT three times a week until I could drive, then outpatient PT twice a week. And of course, both therapists gave me strict instructions on exercises to do on days they weren't there. To tell the truth, I would not have wanted an app that recommended any more PT than I was already doing. LOL. I'll be interested on whether you get any reports of people who have used this app. Also, I think I understand your check in w/ the PCP. They need to do a bunch of blood tests, xrays, etc. just to make sure you are healthy enough for surgery. For me they just called it a pre-op appointment.
You will pass with flying colors! One word of caution: with my doctor, if you show up for surgery and have so much as a small cut or nick - he will cancel the surgery. He says that risks infection. So he had me quit shaving my legs 2 week in advance so I wouldn't make a mistake and get a cut. Just FYI. Good luck. Let us know how it goes tomorrow.
