After knee replacement surgery

Posted by beatricefay @beatricefay, Jun 16, 2016

Had left knee replaced 9 days ago. Right knee two years ago. Having a problem with inflammation so hard to bend knee and exercise. Trying to ice and raise knee above heart. Doctor suggested getting compression hose. Anybody have this experience and can offer suggestions. So tired all the time from pain interrupting my sleep and painkillers. My insurance refused to pay for the painkiller recommended by surgeon so have to take one with more opiates. That's frustrating. Two years ago it was covered but now too expensive for me to use. Seems the drug companies, not our doctors are determining what we use.

Hi, I’m new to this group so forgive me if this has already been discussed. I’ve had both of my knees replaced within the past 3 years. I recovered remarkably well. I have not however been able to kneel down on either of my knees without excruciating pain! Has anyone else experienced this? To me, it feels like kneeling on shards of broken glass.

@kdo0827, I was told when I had my knee replaced to avoid kneeling on the knee directly if possible, especially on hardened surfaces. I am 13 years post-op from my knee replacement and still don't kneel on my knee, and if I do accidentally it hurts. It is about the only thing that does hurt. I can see how this would be more difficult with both knees replaced though, as I still have my left knee in tact.

Hi @melslim. You are doing fine with how the site works and found a good discussion to ask your question in. I would like to invite @larrynauta back in to this conversation as they spoke about a knee revision. We have a lot of members who have talked about having hip revisions in the past, but not as many with knee revisions. I am hoping your question sparks a new discussion of members talking about knee revisions.

In the meantime, are you comfortable sharing a bit more about your situation with the other members? Can you tell us a bit more about the failed TKR?

Hi: Mari: did you have a series of injections in each joint? I'm calling Dr Vangsness Tues. I have a shoulder, lower back and both knees. One knee does not have the ACL. Thank you for the info.

I had 1 shot of Stem Cell and 1 shot of PRP in 5 joints. you can have more.

Not sure if this will help, but …. they started me out on compression hose from the start with no end date in sight. I left them off one day and my leg and foot swelled twice their size. Put them back on and swelling in leg is gone but of course the knee is still swollen and this is to be expected. You only need wear the hose during the day but there is no harm in wearing them 24 hours/day if you are alone. You won't be able to put them on yourself so will be dependent on others. I wear mine 24/7 until a friend comes over to change every other day. Hope this works.

I was an active competitive tennis player. Many tournaments. I had at least 3-4 miniscus tears repaired and cleaned. I’ve had a TKR 10 years ago that has given me a hard time. About a year ago, I started having pain, swelling and what seemed to be, my knee getting out of socket with severe pain. After a little wiggling I could get it back in place. It kept getting worse to wear I was not able to stand for longer than an hour. I’ve been active all my lift. My surgeon said x-ray indicated my plastic piece between the metal where my knee bends was disintegrating. Also the entire replacement was turned inside. Recommend a Revision. That is my RIGHT knee. Several years ago I had a complete tear on my LEFT knee. I was unable to get surgery or PT. It has healed on its own and doesn’t hurt at all. It’s not as strong but no pain. After my R knee was done I continued playing tournament tennis. I’m assuming that is why my Right TKR failed. I want to know how hard this revision will be and how long it will take to be able get around comfortably again. I’ve been told that it’s a twice as long surgery and rehab. Someone please let me know what to expect. I’m 60 years old.
Thanks for any help!

Hi @melslim,

I'm tagging @crazedredhead55 @amberpep @montanasue48 who have all shared their experiences with RTKR – I'm certain they will return with more insights for you.
