Ladies: How are you managing vaginal atrophy as you age?
TO THE LADIES ONLY: As I got older I started developing vaginal atrophy. Then I started developing open splits on my labia that were extremely painful. I went to urgent care one weekend and was prescribed vaginal estrogen medicine. It did the trick but I didn’t want to use estrogen. I went to a GYN that recommending organic coconut oil to use externally only. This was a few years ago and it has worked perfectly. I have never had another problem. At all. I wanted to pass along a natural inexpensive solution to vaginal atrophy.

Worth a try as it can’t hurt you. Works for me, although I also use estrogen cream twice a week.

1 ReactionI have used VagiFem for more than 20 years. It works, though expensive.

1 ReactionThat’s the beauty of coconut oil is that it’s cheap and works. And, nice on your hands or face, too.

1 ReactionIt is not necessarily noncomedogenic. Neutrogena foot cream works, too.

1 ReactionIt has been used for centuries on skin and hair. I have not noticed any issue with pores. It improves both. I am allergic to so many things. I can put coconut oil around my eyes and on my vagina, my two most sensitive areas. I am 76.

4 ReactionsHas anyone heard of or used olive oil instead of coconut oil? I’m sensitive to coconut oil. I was just prescribed estrogen cream but not sure if I want to use it
I’ve had a burning sensation for 14 days and I’m desperate for relief
I love the estrogen cream. It just makes me feel healthier. I wasn’t doing terrible before I started using it, but I’m still glad I tried it. I haven’t tried the oils yet. I’m not sure I need the oil, but I want to be proactive and stay supple.
Hormones make all of us feel good. I loved the hormone pills I was given after my hysterectomy, called them my “fountain of youth pill.” It was not fun getting off of them, but I was told that they can cause cancer and that I should stop hormones. I stopped and today I feel great without them. Coconut oil doesn’t cause cancer. That’s why I use coconut oil instead of hormones. I hope this helps.

1 ReactionMy understanding of estrogen cream is that it doesn’t enter bloodstream the way oral estrogen does and is therefore not a cancer risk. Several doctors have confirmed this.
I hope they are correct because I use it every other day- alternating with coconut oul.

6 ReactionsI need to research this more, but the comments from the female urologists I have heard online stressed that the lack of local estrogen also causes problems with the bladder and other pelvic structures. I need to search for more published studies on it. So preventative care is a goal for me.
