How to reduce my events while using my Cpap

Posted by alan bruce @alanbruce, Feb 25, 2019

I track my events, usage, seal and total score daily on Myair which is a Resmed product. I have used a Cpap machine for about 6 months and have had good success however my events seem stay below 5 for a few days and then jumps up to 8 or 9 for a day and then goes back to below 5.. It seems to be a regular pattern however I have not been able to determine why my events go up. Any suggestions are ideas on how to reduce my events would be great.

I had nasal surgery where they excised part of the turbinates to open things up. Had a long-term sinus infection which went undiagnosed for 9 months, then 5 months of antibiotics, then the surgery. Long before the surgery I switched to a full face mask because I couldn't breathe through the nasal mask.

Unfortunately, it's nearly 4 years later and I have chronic sinus drain down the throat and trouble breathing through the nose regardless - even with using fluticasone spray.

I use the fluticasone spray , I have a lot of drainage . I’ve been sleeping in the recliner some and keep waking up with fluid in my throat/lungs. I don’t know that I can use a full face since it goes over your eyes , I have Sjogren’s with my eyes being dry I’ve already tore the tissue

The mask I have is one that covers my mouth and has nasal pillows that contact the nostrils. I have another that covers the mouth and the nose.

"Full face" seems to be an imprecise term.

Both of mine are considered "full face" masks, I've seen "total face" masks that do indeed cover the eyes (I'd hate that, myself).

I have no answers for our stuffy/runny nose situation - after my sinus infection I was directed to stay away from decongestants and antihistamines. Fiddling with CPAP temperature and humidity levels haven't done a thing for me.

My mask goes against the bottom of the nose and over the mouth and the hose hooks into the headgear on top of your head. If I pinch the tip of my nose up and down I can breathe fine so he tried the balloon with no luck so he says only thing to do is move the septum. Maybe one of these days we will get some answers.

Same as my mask.

I think my nose issue may be related to catching too many basketballs with my face!

Good luck getting a solution. All my best!

Balloon Sinuplasty they put a balloon up your nose to expand the opening to help with narrowing of the sinus

@lisalucier Thank you for the welcome! I personally don't have sleep apnea. I have been a registered sleep technologist for about 9 years. I run sleep studies and do PAP titrations when indicated. I speak from observation. When patients return with breakthrough symptoms it is often an issue with the mask. Either the mask is not the proper size, not tightened with a good seal, or there is oral breathing while using a nasal mask. Apneas, in general, tend to be worse during REM sleep and also while sleeping on your back. It is a possibility during the titration study, minimally REM or back sleeping was seen. It is also very important to note the original amount of apneas before treatment compared to the number after therapy. The goal of PAP therapy is a great improvement rather than "perfect"...if that makes sense.

Sometimes when my seal is poor, my incidents are low. However, when the seal is very good, the incidents are high. This makes no sense to me. Been looking for an explanation for a while. Help@

Sometimes the CPAP can cause emergent central apneas .
I believe it’s when the pressure is high. My events are 20-30 an hour and haven’t been controlled yet after 3 lab sleep
Studies and then a home watch PAT one to verify some central sleep apnea vs leg movement problems. Choice now is either to do a 4th sleep study to titrate an ASV unit or switch to a unit that will force a breath if I don’t breath in a certain time frame.
I’m seriously thinking about Remede as final treatment.
