Downsizing, To Move or Not to Move? That is the Question
At some point as we age, we will have to make a decision about leaving our homes and downsizing. Maybe in our own town or to another town. Maybe to smaller home, condo, apartment, or assisted living/senior community.
When the time comes to downsize, seniors can struggle with a multitude of emotional, physical, and financial challenges.
How do you make an informed decision about when to downsize?
What tips do you have to share?

You are lucky you can afford a 55+ Living facility like that....alot of people cannot. And North Carolina is a beautiful place to live. I wouldn't be complaining.
We will eventually relocate, to live in a more affordable state, BUT the health care must be there. I have too many issues otherwise.
We will donate have before. The hard donations would be my craft supply. I really would rather take it with me, it gives me joy.
Everything else can go lol. I right now dont feel too attached to materials. I would love to go to a warmer climate and ditch the much loved snow.
I want to move before it all would fall onto my guys shoulders.
Hi and yes Im 65 and my wife 73, But for now we are waiting. Here in Arizona there has been a large increase in housing cost which would mean we could get a lot for the current house but to buy another would be more expensive. So we are going to wait and see where the market goes.
Good article about how the national association of realtors will have to lower their commissions after the lawsuit. I think it is in the Washington post this morning.
Yes! It’s also in the New York Times.
Nearby medical care is a real bonus.
We live in Durham NC, so multiple hospitals and clinics of the Duke system are within 3 miles.
When my wife had surgeries here I could easily stop in for several visits a day. If you've ever had to travel 30 miles in congested traffic to visit a loved one in hospital or get a blood test, you know what a value it is to have a family health clinic a short, quiet drive nearby.
Luck had very little to do with it.
Maybe that is where I saw it. Thx
I want to applaud the “ It's the memories that are precious, not the objects, and I still have the memories” thought 👏.
Regarding the things; visual items take a picture, add a caption to reflect the meaning, and add into a photo album (better yet put onto a memory stick or iCloud site) watch every so often. Say good bye to the things, give away to those in need if you can.
Absolutely! "“ It's the memories that are precious, not the objects, and I still have the memories." I've been really good about "stuff" - china, silver, glassware, souvenirs & "treasures" but memories are harder - much has gone to family or those who are in need/want of what we once used.
Memories, though, I value. I was going through photos today on Picasa - dating all the way to 2005 - thousands of images, and physically they take less space than a can of Coke. Screening out junk and duplicates - which deletes them from the computer, the cloud and the phone.
We just talked - when we go back to Minnesota this summer, all of our photos and slides will go to the digitizer for conversion, so we can do the same. It will clear out 2 deep drawers of photos and 4 or more "banker boxes" of slides.
We own a video picture frame, where we have a rotating slide show of current and past photos, and a separate function for short video clips. Not only do we enjoy it, but our young grandsons can watch it for hours, remembering our adventures together and asking about Mom & Auntie when they were little.
