Journaling - The Write Stuff For You?

Posted by Ginger, Volunteer Mentor @gingerw, Jun 19, 2020

Long ago –okay, for me, it was long ago!- it was common for a young person to keep a diary, a place to write down the heartaches and giggles of growing up, the trials and tribulations of school, friendships, sports and activities. Sometimes it was a locked book, so that we felt secure knowing our secret thought remained a secret.

How times have changed! While I no longer keep a classic diary, it is no less important for me to write down thoughts, ideas, and heaven-knows-what, on a regular basis. Nowadays, the common name is a “journal”, and seems to appeal to every segment of society. There are an abundance of ways to do this, and so many reasons why. Although I prefer longhand, many people use a computer, and there are any number of prompts/styles/methods.

Let’s explore this together!

Do you journal? What prompted you to start? What would you tell someone who wants to start?

@pvctom2021 Each day we take as it comes. Some days seem to be more difficult than others. And, truly, that's okay! Writing out the concerns we face at that moment can help to ease the anxiety, and give us something to address in a positive manner.

Hoping your aches from the recent fall abate over time. The memory in your mind may take longer, and at some level you will be watching your foot placement and balance. I do that everyday, not trusting my balance anymore. That in itself can be anxiety-provoking!

Thank you for your reply and good advice…I agree with you and trusting balance is not something I do anymore…I now look down at my shoe laces, triple knot and no overhang as well as wider steps with my trusty cane beside me…in a way, it makes me feel like Gene Berry in Bat Masterson…you and others here have been so helpful to me and supportive…thank you so much..stay well and strong..🙏pvctom

Hello to all,

The
Dreaded Morning Anxiety came and has now subsided…dealing with the dealies …and my reasoning for this anxiety is that it stems from a fear of being left alone…That is my fear…I first felt it when I was a child..then in High School, then in College…and as I worked my way traveling around the country I found myself being totally emotionally independent and not at all bothered by this awful feeling of being alone…I look back on my life and adventures…and I’m amazed at the capriciousness of my escapades and the chances that I took without a worry…I am a man with nine lives or I’ve had surely, a wonderful guardian angel 👼 looking after me….but now those days are long gone as well as the times…I have to realize that the times have changed and the freedom and ease to come and go and just about do anything and cheaply have long passed me by…so, this Friday morning I say a short prayer and count my blessings for sure…for I am surely in a good place and have been blessed many times over…I am on my way shortly to the mall for a walk with my cane and hope for a good day and night to all that come here🙏 pvctom

Thank you for your insights and updates”I hear you loud and clear.” I just returned from a cruise and am reflecting how much more
I used my cane this trip. My wife claims that when I use my cane my whole demeanor changes. I seldom use my cane at home and only when I plan to make a long walk. Today a long walk is half a block. I’m getting ready to resume my Walking and Balancing PT, to straighten up my back and my “act”!
Blessings to you my friend.

@pvctom2021 How interesting that this "ah-ha!" insight has come to the surface. Do you think the journaling you are doing has any role in this? Reflecting back on what you have done over the course of your lifetime, and the adventures [positive and negative] sometimes gives us a connecting thread to pull it together.

What a blessing to have this day before us, and a chance to discover even more that may be lurking just below the surface of our thoughts and actions!

@captboat I keep two canes in my car. One is collapsible, the other a one-of-a-kind. Then there is the cane in our back bedroom, and another one by the front door. They are an assurance to me and have been the subject of writings over the years! Having no real feeling or sense of being from left knee down, they offer a support physically and emotionally. Like you, I can get around the house cane-free, but depend on dual walking sticks for a walk around the neighborhood. I'm sure there's a journal writing there, somewhere!

Good luck on the walking and balancing PT!

Yes, I do…the writing down seems to make me see it a bit further and clearer than before..this iPhone is a tablet and 12k cross pen, and it’s important to me to be writing it to someone else…anyone who may come here…it’s important to me to talk or tell my little journal posts to someone who might read on…and everyday I am grateful for a chance to do that..🙏pvctom

@captboat
Again thanks for your kind reply…I had a hip replacement almost a year ago, and was doing fine with the walking until 2 weeks ago, I stepped on some excess lace from some running shoes I was trying on, and quickly went down hard on the locker room floor…so, since then, my demeanor and sureness has taken a very different turn.. now very cautious and use my cane for security and safety…my best wishes to you…pvctom

Hello to all,

I just want to thank all of the nice reactions and replies that I’ve received from my posts…it makes me feel so good when I see an inbox reply left from someone…
I woke this morning with a rather intense morning fear…it must connect with General Anxiety Disorder GAD) and what I’ve read in senior’s especially is the Cortisol Awakening Response (CAR)…I’ve been sore since my fall but am icing and taking it easier, and using a cane when walking at the mall…I again count my blessings , drink some coffee and be Grateful that my problems are not insurmountable…I feel like I’m in a good place when I leave a post here…wish all who come here a nice safe day and night…

It is a good thing to be and feel connected. It helps beat isolation.

Insurmountable…that’s a word. Listen to the song, “Rise Up.” It is a beautiful song, great meaning.

Take care of yourself and have a great weekend!

When you feel down, this is a wonderful song to sit with the feelings, and overcome them. This song always brings out the tears.

“Rise Up”

You're broken down and tired
Of living life on a merry go round
And you can't find the fighter
But I see it in you so we gonna walk it out
And move mountains
We gonna walk it out
And move mountains
And I'll rise up
I'll rise like the day
I'll rise up
I'll rise unafraid
I'll rise up
And I'll do it a thousand times again
And I'll rise up
High like the waves
I'll rise up
In spite of the ache
I'll rise up
And I'll do it a thousand times again
For you
For you
For you
For you
When the silence isn't quiet
And it feels like it's getting hard to breathe
And I know you feel like dying
But I promise we'll take the world to its feet
And move mountains
Bring it to its feet
And move mountains
And I'll rise up
I'll rise like the day
I'll rise up
I'll rise unafraid
I'll rise up
And I'll do it a thousand times again
For you
For you
For you
For you
All we need, all we need is hope
And for that we have each other
And for that we have each other
And we will rise
We will rise
We'll rise, oh, oh
We'll rise
I'll rise up
Rise like the day
I'll rise up
In spite of the ache
I will rise a thousand times again
And we'll rise up
High like the waves
We'll rise up
In spite of the ache
We'll rise up
And we'll do it a thousand times again
For you
For you
For you
For you
Ah, ah, ah, ah
