Eliquis and leg weakness and fatigue

Posted by ace51 @ace51, Mar 3 12:42pm

I experienced bilateral PE from DVT after abdominal surgery 5/11/23. I was put on Eliquis 5mg twice daily after my initial anticoagulation. I have no history of cardiac problems or a-fib. I noticed immediately that I felt extremely tired and worn out but attributed it to the PE. I have remained on this med and had additional abdominal surgery 11/15/23. Since this last surgery I am experiencing incredible fatigue and worrisome weakness in my back and legs. I have an appointment with doctor tomorrow to discuss this. Hopefully he will discontinue this med since it was used as a precaution for further clots post November surgery. I was so relieved to find that many others have experienced the same thing and it’s not a figment of my imagination.

I had similar issues; went off and now better. Trying to determine which product to use in place of eliquis. Have you had any luck with a different product?

I’m not taking any other anticoagulant to replace the Eliquis. I was taking that after a PE last May and as a safeguard after my most recent surgery in November. Just planned to take it for the 12 week window after surgery to avert any further clotting problems. I was really dragging and short of breathe when I went to pulmonologist last week not realizing how critical my condition was.
Since I have no a-fib or cardiac problems I’m not anticipating any further medication.
Out of curiosity what were your symptoms?

This weeks labs are same as last. Hemoglobin is 8. Everything else in CBC is low also. No outward signs of bleeding. Still sluggish and short of breathe if heavy exertion. Cardiologist scheduled echocardiogram for 11th. Pulmonologist says lung/heart clear.
GI appointment went well. Since no outward sign of bleeding and soft abdomen and no pain planning weekly labs to continue. Iron supplement prescribed and consult with hematologist. Feels I have severe iron deficiency anemia and need IV infusion of iron to help get hemoglobin back up quicker. Planning upper endoscopy for later. Agrees to hold off on any colonoscopy since I’ve had one within last year which was negative except for diverticulosis.
Agreed that Eliquis most likely has contributed to appearance of blood loss since I tend to be anemic and with this drug side effects include anemia and bleeding.
In a holding pattern for now.
