Spotting Following Cortisone Injection
Anyone else experienced spotting following a cortisone injection? This is my second experience. Both times it started about 10 days after the injection. Just wondering how long it usually lasts. The first time was a number of years ago and I thought it only lasted a few hours. I'm now on Day 2. I'm 61 years old and went through menopause when I was 52.

Got my results from my hsteroscopy d & c. Everything benign. Doctor said they are finding more that cortisone injections can cause spotting. But if she didn't do procedure wouldn't have found polyps and made sure.
Did you modify your HRT after spotting? I'm 10 yr post-menopause, on HRT, got cortisone shot in shoulder (which helped tendonitis immensely) but started vaginal bleeding 10 days after shot. Just had annual gyno exam a few weeks prior to cortisone injection and all was normal. I had no idea until reading this thread!
I’ve been wondering the same thing. I’ve had two instances now when after getting steroid shot in my hip, begin bleeding 14 or so days later. Last for a week. Also on HRT and wondering about that. I have a yearly exam with my gyno in April and plan on asking. After direst episode I had ultrasound and uterine biopsies but everything negative. Neither my gyno nor my ortho doc know anything about this happening. Wondering I if anyone else has had their gyno change their HRT due to this PMB due to injections??
I haven't contacted my gyno yet but I discontinued estradiol after 2nd day of bleeding and plan to resume after bleeding stops (its been 5 days and seems to be easing up). The steroid shot was so helpful for my shoulder issue that I'd do it again and deal with 5-7 days of bleeding, as long as it isn't creating more serious problems like polyps or uterine cancer. The gynos and ortho docs need to be better informed about this for sure!
Totally agree. At the first instance, when I hadn’t connected the injection with the bleeding, I was completely ready to just get a complete hyst. It was hard waiting on those biopsy results. And even now, wondering what these shots can be doing (besides helping my hip!), I still may go ahead with the hyst and not have to worry about that anymore
Waiting for results like that is so stressful. I hope you're able to get a trusted second opinion before deciding on surgery. I have same concerns about unknown side effects of steroid shots - these are the choices now?!
I'm experiencing this now. Appts soon for ultrasound and biopsy. My gyn has never heard of this. The stress is unreal playing the weighting game.
Hi. I am 62 and had spotting 10 post kenalog injection. Ultrasound found slight thickening of endometrial lining 6/7mm so now they want to do biopsy. I wonder if steroid can cause the slight thickening? Nervous but glad to have read others had similar experience with no other findings.
I wonder if topical corticosteroids can cause spotting too … has anyone experienced this using cortisone creams/ointments.
Yes had two biopsies in office neg. Everytime hip injection spot bleed. Then had to do hysterscopy D &C. Turned out 2 small polops that probably showed the thickening on ultrasound. Everything ok now. Wish doctors would put us through this.
