I need help getting off of 80mg omeprazole

Posted by jazzgirl @jazzgirl, Feb 23 9:30am

Has anyone weaned off of 80mg ? I take 40mg in the morning and 40mg with dinner. My doctor wants me to stop taking the evening 40mg every other day and use pepcid instead on those days . and then stop evening dose completely after two weeks. I'm concerned that's too fast I stoped cold turkey with only 20mg and had severe acid reflux that's why My gi doctor put me on 80mg.

@farmersmith

I use OptiMag 125 and K+2Potassium in the evening. Medication is a foreign substance in our bodies and if you read the labels of most laxatives they say not to take for more than a week. Consider adding a Naturopath to your health team. Good luck, @farmersmith

Hells bells I don't know how to send this to you cpd54 who LIKED me. I'll send it to myself and see if it gets to you? Instead of integrative ideas I received a bunch of emails telling of how to cut pills in half. My goal is not to be on drugs. I have been fortunate with a healthy lifestyle and the advice of both an MD and ND's at 70 something I don't take any drugs. Our chemistry may be unbalanced but we never are deficiency in propylene glycol often in laxatives (which is also the double strength alcohol in antifreeze) unless we forget to put it in our car when temperatures are below freezing. lol PS I use the minerals in the night too to get the right osmotic gradient for a redundant colon since our motility time is longer. Good luck @farmersmith

@farmersmith integrative medicine can be useful after getting off drugs, but tapering by "cutting pills in half" is necessary first.

You are fortunate to be able to avoid drugs. Many of us need them and even endure side effects for the benefit vs risk.

I have a kid on insulin. She would have died 30 years without.

Thanks @windyshores for that reminder. Not everyone takes the same path with their lifestyle, food choices and health practitioners. Even then there is no guarantee regarding many health conditions. I am sorry our medical system is not very open to the values awaiting us with Naturopathic care and am hopeful more people discover the value of its holistic, functional, integrative health care value. Thanks @farmersmith, sorry for being slow on the uptake of the pill splitting! lol Best to your daughter and her healthy life!

Hi. I too have had to wean off of a ppi at large doses. My dr did it much slower. My weaning was over 4 months. So had no side effects. Good luck! It will get better. I’m on Pepcid now. It definitely helps. Changed my diet and sleep on an incline with several pillows. You’ve got this! 😊😊😊😊😊😊

Dependence on omeprazole needs to be reduced gradually. I used to take one pill (20mg) a day, but now I hardly take omeprazole, and instead I take Pepcid (10mg) once every two days.

My functional med dr suggested /urged slippery elm capsules rather than PPIs. Which I took in capsule format for many years I have recently been diagnosed with collagenous colitis.. .one of the causes....you got itPPIs!. Now suggested I take it in powder format vs capsules....1 1/2 tsp in a cup of water. Husband was on prison as well. Cardiologist urged slow weaning c I'm on old nurse. Original order for PPIs was 2 weeks unless diagnosis was barrels esopagitis ir ZE...Zollinger Ellison. Of course it was big pharma who stated Ppis safe to use long term.. just do a really slow weaning

I got myself off PPIs by completely changing my diet. It was, and still is, difficult, but well worth it. I eat whole food plant based. No processed foods. Very hard to do. I made the mistake of eating one Boston cream donut and got a big surge of acid reflux. No more donuts for me. I can eat a small amount of 85% dark chocolate, but I stay away from sugar and flour in general. Avoid foods that cause inflammation -dairy grains. It is tough, but I feel great.

I was taking 40 mg protonix for years and it didn't seem to help. Just went through bad bout for 2 months reflux, 8 months after I stopped an antidepressant which I wish I'd never done....seems the year I took that I had no problems. New gastro is weening the protonix to every other day for a week then stop replaced with 40 mg OTC pepcid. I have break thru reflux. Not real bad but enough to bug you. Wants me to do this until I have the endoscopy which hasn't been scheduled as yet. Not sure what happens after that. Good luck.
