Barrett's esophagus, gastroesophageal reflux disease and acute gastritis

Posted by jafd @jafd, May 9, 2016

Hi, I'm new to the site and would like some advise on my situation. Im a 56 year old female. who loves good food and drink but for many years i was having chest pain and popping tums before bed. My gynecologist suggested i have a endoscopy done. They said I had Barretts esophagus without dysplasia, gastroesophageal reflux disease with esophagitis, and acute gastritis without hemorrhage. I'm taking omeprazole 20mg twice a day. first endoscopy was in 2014 and 2nd one was in 2015 (which I lost 30 pounds) and still showed barretts but no ulcers or esphagitis. my concern is I would like to get off the omeprazole with the scare of Kidney problems. a friend said the local natural food store has many effective ways to stop acid and that omeprazole doesn't cure barretts. been stressing about all the side effects of being on this medicine the rest of my life. should i get a second opinion? Are there other options for me? i having been following a healthy diet, stopped drinking alcohol, caffeine and soda, spicy foods ect...

Jafd, have you spoken to your doctor about long-term use of omeprazole?

<br />Sorry for the delay in responding but have been traveling (visiting Mayo, etc). I’m on 40 MG 2x a day of Nexium 24 which is quiet high and I also take Vitamin D3 which helps with the uptake of calcium. All bloodwork and tests of kidney and liver functions are great. If I were you I would talk to your MD before you go off of your meds. You could get a second opinion, and if you decide to I would highly recommend The Mayo Clinic in Rochester. I travel there 4 times a year, each round trip 2,600+ miles. Dr Kenneth Wang there is a super Dr and highly recommend him. If you do go off the meds, don’t stop your Endoscopies since Barrett’s can turn from no dysplasia to Hi Grade Dysplasia in the matter of months; I am proof of that. Best of luck,
Dave

No, I haven't talked to my doctor about being on omeprazole long term. I have an appt in fall and will discuss it with him then. I am thinking about getting another opinion just for my own mental sake.

sorry I missed this too. I as well was traveling back to mayo in Jacksonville last week for my 3 month check up. My check up went well .. My blood work according to my Hemotoligy Dr was better than hers. Lol..
I have acid reflex on steroids as I call it, but the doctors will say I have GERD.. I take 20 ml omperzole in the morning and 20 ml omperzole at night. I gave up everything but tea and coffee .. Plus I take vitamin D3 ..also I think it seems to help when I drink alkaline water. If I don't take this medicine..I get stabbing chest pains and it feels a I was hit a cement truck in the morning. Plus I get a burning sensation down my throat so bad I swear I was poisoned. It took three different acid reflex pills to find one that worked for me Plus it took me a few months to get it under control. I swore I was dying the whole time.. GERD is brutal. I tried nexium it made my blood sugar drop. Wish you the best..

I had been on PPI's since the 90,s and had LYNX sugery at Mayo in Phoeniz Az Dec 2014. Despite all that I still had to continue taking Zantac twice a day and still had burning. I read everything I could get my hands on and finally came across a book called "Fast Tract Digestion, Heartburn." It changed my life in just a few days. Went of the meds within one day. Lost the 5 pounds of water bloat in 2 days but the biggest surprise was it lowered my A1C to the normal range after battling it for 40 years! I had to cut out fruit which was my only cheat and it turns out all the foods I had been told to cut out, coffee, wine, ect, don't bother me at all. Hopefully this will help

Hi @saucy. P.S. Love your username 🙂 Welcome to Connect!

Wow, isn't it interesting how different things affect different people!? Other than cutting out fruit, what else did the book recommend? So glad to hear you are doing better... and get to enjoy your wine!

Thanks for the welcome. I have never corresponded with any sites before but I've been so excited by the results of this simple diet when nothing else has worked for years! I have been on a low carb diet since the 90's due to high blood sugars. I always felt that my reflux and diabetes were somehow tied together. I have a low BMI, work out regularly, don't smoke and don't fit the profile for either but I was always told they were genetic. What I didn't know was that the high fiber and fruit were the main culprit. I was eating protein bars that were high in fiber and of course fruit. I had never heard of fruit malabsorbtion. I was tested for fruit and lactose intolerance before my surgery and was told it was negative so never considered the fruit. All diets rave about fruit being good so never considered it to be the problem all though I always noticed that several hours after eating it my stomach would burn. It's mainly a low carb low fiber diet but I eat most vegetables just not corn, potatoes or high starch vegetables. Now when I eat something I shouldn't I feel it for several days and my blood sugar and water weight goes up. I want to share this in hopes it will help someone else struggling with these problems. And yes I do enjoy my wine and coffee!
