Constant itching scalp

Posted by jeanadair123 @jeanadair123, Jul 19, 2021

Just interested if anyone has an itchy scalp? I have had 3 cancers but this is driving me crazy. Two doctors gave me shampoo but the side effects loss of hair etc put me off using them. I have been using 1 tablespoon of olive oil and tea tree and peppermint oil. Has anyone had a problem and if so what did they use? Thanks

I am also having extreme problems with itchy scalp. There is no dandruff. I have tried all the itchy/scalp shampoos with only minor, short-lasting relief. Conditioners do not help or hurt. This developed at the same time palpable red/purple dots showed on my calves. They are extremely itchy. Substantial, unintentional weight loss also began at this time.

This may sound lame but did you recently shave your legs with something difference or use a different cream?

No, my legs have so little hair, that I seldom need to shave. And I haven’t been using any new creams .

@susan824 how long have you had the itching and spots? What does your doctor say about this?

It started around April. The spots look like petechiae, but they are slightly raised and palpable, and itchy.

I have Sjögren’s syndrome, but don’t know if this is related. My doctor has treated this like normal hives. Told me to take Pepsis and Zyrtec. My dermatologist just put me on naltrexone. I’ve tried steroids , but no luck.

@jeanadair123 I find using any kind of hair conditioner causes my scalp to itch. So even though my hair is dry, I don’t use a conditioner. Someone suggested an apple cider vinegar rinse which I tried and almost hit the ceiling with the burning of my scalp! I also find an antihistamine tablet helps ease the itching.

I have been dealing with intermittent itchy scalp for years. Before figuring out what actually helped I tried everything!! The only over the counter non prescription thing that helped was Selsun blue shampoo. For the best relief & results prescription steroid Clobetasol shampoo works best for me. I have recently been diagnosed with Grovers disease which causes parts of my body to itch & I get a rash periodically. I believe my itch scalp is part of having Grovers disease.

@ddaileygunther in my case Selsun Blue and Clobetasol shampoo didn’t work. I do believe everyone’s body is different so what works for one doesn’t for another.

My scalp has been extremely itchy for years. About nine years ago, I developed rashes on my lower legs that looked like petechiae, but itched. Tried steroids with no luck. Recently, my dermatologist prescribed Naltrexone for the itch. The relief was almost instantaneous. I had never tied together the itchy scalp with the problem on my legs, but Naltrexone helped both.

Possibly Grovers disease? Your Dr. should biopsy!

Sorry The clobetasol shampoo or Selsun blue has not worked for you. Have you tried Fluocinonide topical solution? Predisone?

REPLY

@ddaleygunther yes and yes. Fluocinonide works in my mouth for lichen planus but not on my scalp. did nothing for my mouth. Prednisone works when I get hives, but not for anything else. Go figure, eh! I am an anomaly - what works for/on others doesn’t work for/on me and vice versa. Then there are things that work on other and also on me. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Try Advantan for the itchy calf dots. Worked for me.
