Newly diagnosed with CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease) and terrified

Posted by nightwhisper @nightwhisper, Jan 21 3:59am

Hello. I'm looking for some comfort because what I read on the internet about kidney disease is very bad. I had blood in the urine from the glomeruli of the kidneys in 2011 but we monitored it and I was doing very well things were quiet. Now suddenly it started to rise my creatinine and the percentage of my kidneys working is low as my nephrologist told me. I think I'm in stage 3 kidney disease. I'm doing tests all the time and I'm afraid that every time I go for blood tests my creatinine will be more and more up and I can't handle it all.I'm so scared it's progressing fast.I always shudder at illnesses and now something so serious is happening to me,it's a nightmare.I thought I was doing fine,I don't know what this new kidney problem is.Can can someone give me some advice to get courage for my disease? What would you say to someone who has just been diagnosed with kidney disease and is panicking? I am very sad and scared, I feel like my life is over and I am worried about my family how will I leave them .

I had mild CKD (stage 2) due to proteinuria. Not really sure the cause, but I’ve been taking 3-4 grams daily of turmeric/curcumin (capsules & tea) the last 7 months.
The last test shows normal 24 hour urine, low but normal levels of protein.(120mg)
My eGFR went from 61-64 to now 71. Cr/bun was fine before but it’s down a bit, too.
I see my doctor tomorrow so will ask him.

The idea is that sodium can help raise blood pressure (along with hydration) and thereby help the kidneys with their filtration job.

I recently went through an issue of low blood pressure. Extremely low. Even salty snacks were not helping. In the end, what was decided was to stop the low dose blood pressure meds I had been on for years [put in place to ease stress on my kidneys, not for high BP]. I am on daily peritoneal dialysis, and also increased my hydration slightly. I have to watch my intake of quality protein, seeing that said dialysis tends to rob my system of good stuff and protein is important to keep up. The albumin level is carefully checked each month. Happy to say it took 8 days but blood pressure now runs about 114/74 with no meds.

If you are a Mayo patient ask for a consult with the renal dietician. You need to figure out what your limits are for sodium, protein, phosphorus, potassium, etc. Ther are specific formulas based on your weight, and labs. Everyone can be different. For example where some people are on potassium restriction I have to supplement my potassium. For most it is sodium and protein that needs to be watched. I wish you the best.

Hi, I was in your situation 3 yrs ago. The effect of having only one kidney after a removal of my left kidney due to cancer, got my blood levels unstable. So I was diagnosed with stage 3 kidney disease. My only consolation then was taking in water to lower my creatinine level. But that’s not the only source. So I went to see a renal dietician who has guided me through all this every 4 mons. My diet mainly consists of fish, some shellfish and veggies limited salt and a regular walking exercise.
It has improved and stabilized my egfr, creatinine and almost all other vital labs, my blood pressure and diabetes. Most esp I stopped eating prepared food that had lots of phosphorus which are not indicated in the nutritional value of the products.
Do not be alarmed. See your nephrologist with lab tests every 4 months because that what’s going to guide the dr, the renal dietician and most esp you and going about your life as normal as possible.
I’m learning to eat chicken which I’m only familiar as fried chicken. So now I cook chicken with some veggies and enjoy it in between fish dishes.
Do not be afraid because feeling that way affect your kidneys too. Ease up your life be more relaxed so your blood pressure is stable too.
Hope this can lighten you up.

That's a tough one. I have great respect for the overwhelming workload our doctors have, but also get wanting to have the results reviewed with you in a timely manner. Perhaps try talking to his nurse, leaving a message for them, explaining that you are having difficulty reaching him and that you want to discuss your recent lab tests . Also remember that some tests take longer to come back and they could be waiting for those tests, to get the full picture.
But if this problem continues and is a persistent complication for you, getting a new doctor is always an
option for you. Hoping you get to speak to them soon.

Thanks Fam,

I finally received a message from Doc via my portal and he said my kidney function is stable, and all my blood work was fine and urine, advised me to keep blood pressure under control. Now since then I went to the ER because I kept feeling light headed and somewhat unbalanced when I walk. They admitted me and gave me the works, an Echo, MRI, Cat scan and everything was normal. Thank God Now they kept me on fluid and while there my creatin went down from 2.4 to 2.0 and GFR went up from 27 to 34, I was encouraged, I pray the Lord keeps it stable. I Thank all of you for your support via this board.

dad0229, Nephrologists tracking my kidney function since 2014. They track proteinuria, creatinine, levels of nitrogen, phosphorous, sodium, blood pressure, and many other things. I drink approx. 60-70 oz of water/day. I used to power exercise weights, treadmill, and swim 3-4/times a week. This increased my creatinine. It seems there's conflicting information but we do the best we can. My eGFR/creatinine has fluctuated over the years. I asked for a Csystatin test to test GFR to compare results. My experience is not to be alarmed when creatinine rises or falls, it is stability they're looking for. I guess a range over time. My eGFR goes from 33 to 25 to 30 to 27. Honestly, it bounces around. I have had proteinuria in the past, but the last 5 tests show no proteinuria. Go figure. Sometimes lab tests are incorrect. My Nephs diagnosis was incorrect locally and corrected at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. We're all human, mistakes are made. I'm not easily alarmed anymore. I used to panic when I saw a bad number. My previous Neph would say "Drink more water" I was already drowning myself with water. Neph would say "Don't exercise before the blood test" Now I know the rise in creatinine was temporary because I stressed my muscles. That's why creatinine increases. Bodybuilders have high creatinine levels.
I now know, to eat the right foods, stay away from processed foods, exercise moderately, and drink water but don't overdo it either. You need salt and potassium. I stay away from processed meats (very bad). Best of luck to your health.

Mine has fluctuated from 35 to 50. Yesterday GFR was 50 and Cystatin C was 54. I am wondering if stopping any flurbiprofen (I now take none at all and didn't take it all the time) is a factor. I only take tylenol now.

over two years-ago I was thinking same thing and was very scared. I decided to do what my drs said about diet and better water consumption I read labels on every food product to learn about sodium and potassium content and try to stay within the needed limits.
I’m so grateful that my creatine
has slowly gone from 2.78 to 1.66
very slightly back into stage 3 from stage 4. I’m feeling Very blessed and grateful. I’m proof that it is within possibility so try hard to comply, drink lots of water but not too much and
do other things good doctors tell you to. Wishing the best for you.
