Anyone using oxycodone to manage cancer pain? Please share.

My pain management team want to start me on oxycodone. I am somewhat afraid of its side effects. Anyone who is on it, please share your experiences.

I would be interested in this as well, since every time I try to take oral pain med other than Tylenol, it upsets my stomach. I would like to hear about useful pain management options other than oxycodone. Ideas, anyone?

I have been able to use Tylenol (85% of the time) and Oxycodone. I try to alternate the two. If I didn't use these drugs, I would have constant back pain. Oxycodone gives me constipation (common side effect). Being on a lot of Tylenol also gives me constipation (less common side effect). Oxycodone also makes me spacey, so I tend to take it more in the evening. So far, oxycodone has been a reliable pain reliever for me. Tylenol sometimes starts slower and ends faster for me.

What is your oxycodone dose? I was prescribe 2.5 mg, by cutting the 5 mg tablet in half. I also take it only at night to help with sleep. Hopefully I can stay on this minimum dose. One does build up a tolerance for this drug.

I was taking it when I was first diagnosed. I had two forms of it. A fast acting one (small round white pill) and a slow release one (little pink rectangular pill). These worked very well for me with no side effects.

As soon as the chemo started working and killing tumours my pain went away and I stopped taking any pain relief.

I hopeful the group can add some information on pain management. Because of bad reaction to codeine, my doctor has me using morphine for pain in my back and stomach. I take 30 mg every 12 hours, and have 15 mg pills I can take every 6 hours for severe pain. As long as I stick to this dose I have few side effects. I do take a powder laxative every few days, it seems to help as I balance between constipation and diarrhea but that is also the cancer. My doctor has also mentioned that morphine raises fewer questions with the pharmacy and insurance companies long term. I has wondering about anyone else's experience with morphine. Thanks very much!

Morning - just adding my info in case it may be helpful.
(for reference - Whipple last June; 6 week hospital stay after nicking bowl - in and out of the hospital for various things last year. Currently doing 5 doses of radiation for lesion on my T4)

I currently take one 10mg tablet of oxycodone in the morning and one at night.
Additionally, I take one 5mg Methadone tablet morning and night.

(side note on the Oxy - it is hard to get sometimes and they are very strict on it)

Also, I take MiraLax every other day - it seems to keep me balanced for my BM.

Hope this info helps someone.

I was prescribed 5 mg, which I split occasionally at first to 2.5 mg to see how I would react. I think, but not sure, the lower dose may not be as effective anymore for me.

I am building tolerance to it. 2.5 mg only last for about 3 hours. Need to take 2.5 mg twice at night to get some sleep. In the day time, I take 500mg of Tylenol as needed. It does help some.
