Stem cell therapy for hip

Posted by kdukes52 @kdukes52, Mar 4, 2018

I’m looking for information on stem cell therapy as an alternative for hip replacement. Any information ?

Thank you Coleen for the information. I have two painful hips and do not want hip replacements. I've looked into Stem Cell therapy and found that Mayo can do it, but it's not cheap and health insurance doesn't pay for it. At least that's what I've been told. Right now I have five weekly appointments starting March 20 for Viscosupplementation injections of Supartz. This will provide a cushion and prolong hip replacement surgery. Hopefully before then health insurance will begin to pay for stem cell therapy. I'm having it done at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, AZ.

I had been having leftknee pain and had two meniscus tear surgeries over the past few years. After the last surgery, my left but hurt with walking, aerobics, etc. The doc and the PT staff thought it was IT band syndrome and imbalance in muscles since my left leg is now so much weaker than my right. Finally, a year after all the PT and shots, and sick of knee problems, I asked to have my hip x-rayed per my physical therapist.

As soon as my ortho looks at the X-ray he says I need a hip replacement, and I have osteoarthritis too. I don't reaaly know any diagnosis since he then recommend a hip doctor. I’m 56 and very healthy. He said it looks like it was injury induced about 15 years ago. I never had hip pain before last year? I need to learn but does anyone tried stem cells in the hip area?

Hello @pattyda10. I combined your discussion with the discussion also participated in titled "Stem Cell Therapy for Hip" -https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/stem-cell-therapy-for-hip/

@rainerhans shared that they tried a stem cell treatment for their knee but did not find it helpful. @rainerhans, if you are comfortable, was the cost to stem cell treatment a barrier? Many insurances still do not cover the procedure from my understanding.

@pattyda10, did your provider give you a referral to a hip specialist? You mentioned you are seeking care at Mayo Clinic, is this something you already have scheduled? How are you currently managing with your hip pain?
