Bronchiectasis and diet
I’ve heard and read conflicting views and recommendations regarding the best diet for those of us with Bronchiectasis, esp. regarding dairy products and whether they contribute to mucus production. What have you found out regarding diet and foods that trigger problems?

Would absolutly love to have ice cream with FRUIT 😉 before bed. Wow, can't believe you were able to. Lucky you. I am hungry all the time, good appetite, thank goodness.
Bought Pumpkin Protein yesterday, 2mg Sodium, made a glassfull and it created thick mucus after drinking, may need to thin it out. Will check out the Orgain next purchase. Thanks for the idea of keeping in the refrigerator ready to go.
I like your shake recipe. Thanks. Happy Sunday!
Hello all,
the NJH nutritionist also said to have a protein shake AFTER you walk or exercise so that you make up for the lost calories. She also said to drink TWO 350 cal drinks ( Ensure plus or others). and yes eat/drink whole milk products and add a spoon of olive oil on your foods and simply stuff yourself with high calorie foods. So different than I thought.
I forgot to mention that I gained weight also with the help of Walkers Shortbread cookies. They are 100 calories each and made only with flour, butter and an small amount of sugar. No weird ingredients and low sugar. I had one for breakfast, lunch and dinner for a total of 300 extra calories.
Hi Sue, I’m new to this site & was just diagnosed with MAC a week ago. I also have bronchiectasis. I already do airway clearance and have been doing tons of research. I was curious about the weight issue that many in this group are commenting on. Do most who participate in the 3 drug treatment for Mac lose weight? Thanks
Many of us find we have lost weight from the infection even before we begin treatment. Then, some of us suffer loss of appetite, nausea, diarrhea, or strange taste from the antibiotics which causes more weight loss.
This is highly individual...I was at an "ideal" BMI before I got sick, and over less than a year lost 20% of my body weight - pretty scary.
Other people find little to no effect on their weight.
Like everything else with MAC & Bronchiectasis, it is highly individual.
What have you experienced so far?
Sue
Good morning Sue. Yes, I think you’re right; it depends on the individual’s response to treatment. Since I just received my results a week ago, I’ve yet to confer with my pulmonologist. Weight wise, however, like you I’m starting at a perfect BMI. I’m 5’3” and weigh 115 lbs. On recent visits to my doctors, however, they have noted that I tend to be anemic. Since I’m concerned about the possibility of losing weight, as well as other side effects, I’ve started taking herbal supplements (Artemisia Annua & Hawaii Licorice
Alcohol-Free Liquid
Extract, Chinese) to boost my immune system; strengthen me and increase my energy. Naturally, when I speak with my pulmonologist mid Feb., I will mention these to him to make certain it doesn’t interfere with the 3 medications. Also, I’m beginning to take a daily probiotic and D3. I’ve taken a spoonful of organic cod liver oil much of my life, but it doesn’t seem to have helped me much. I’m hoping that when I go for my initial baselines, I will have optimal results. Do you know of anyone who has combined herbal ingredients while in treatment with the 3 medications?
Also, I will start taking mullein, another herbal supplement.
Have you found a reputable brand? And has it been tested by a 3rd party? Would like to purchase some, but want to be sure it’s a pure quality product.
Thanks for your help
Before I was diagnosed with Mac and Bronchiectasis, I was unable to gain weight, I was 114 for the past 5 years. When I first started antibiotics I went down to 102 from lack of appetite. I was mostly eating vegetarian diet with some chicken and fish, no dairy. I met with a nutritionist and she pointed out that I wasn’t getting enough protein. I started drinking milk and eating Greek yogurt. I also have more beef and chicken and I’m up 125+lbs., my doctor was so excited. I keep track of what I eat in an app now and I can check my protein, calcium and etc daily. I eat throughout the day, trying to get everything in that I need to eat for the day. Sometimes I feel like my life is just breathing, eating , exercising and Dr. appointments. Looking forward to a slowdown in May, hopefully getting off meds. by then.
I drink an herbal tea blend called Lung Renew. I get it online from Primal Herb. They are a very reputable company and have excellent customer service. The tea is in powder form, and the serving dice is 1/2 tsp. Mullein is the first ingredient, and it contains other herbs which help the respiratory system. If you go on their site, you can get to that particular tea and read the details about its ingredients. I notice a difference when I don’t take it.
