Is it risky to have a scope done?

Many says that bronchoscopies are risky because the "sterile" scopes used can still pass along infection. Does anyone know if other scopes, such as one to look down my throat or to check out GERD, are risky too? I've had laryngitis for a month and I fear an ENT will want to use a scope.

There are “one time use disposable bronchoscopes”. But I don’t know about endoscopes. From what I read, it depends on initial cleaning of bronchoscope followed by sterilization in cidex solution for a few hours. The initial cleaning using a brush can miss bacteria if all steps of procedure are not .followed. You might want to check with your gastroenterologist regarding your concerns.

Hi, I had a broncoscopy back in August and 2 days later had the flu. I was wondering the same thing that you are wondering about the endoscopy since I have a hiatal hernia along with GERD and may need to have the scope.
I guess all we can do is explain our situation to the Dr. and our fear and hope it goes well.

I remember being told there is risk in every medical procedure and perhaps risk if we don’t have it done. Frustrating, but true. I’d only now undergo any absolutely necessary scope.

I did find information on one time use endoscopy scopes as well. In the long run there would less contamination and improved outcomes with disposable scopes.

I've had two, including one SuperDimension (ENB). I figure they are only going to perform one is if you are in pretty shape anyways. Other than a surgical bioposy, it is a sure way to get a correct diagnose and treatment plan. There are some facilities I probably would not have it done, other facilities I trust and would have it done.
