7% Saline Solution

Posted by thumperguy @thumperguy, Jan 7, 2020

Got a supply of 7% vials and got a real jolt in my throat when I began inhaling it. However I quickly adapted to it and was able to finish the vial. Within a few minutes I was coughing and bringing stuff up - a first. I never had a timely response to 0.9. Bottom line: I guess the 7% solution is...well the real solution. Not to be confused with the Sherlock and Sigmund thing. Forgive my corny effort at mirth. Don

For those of you not able to watch the Zoom webinar on Inhaled Hypertonic Saline this Friday. I was told that NTM will have the same information on their youtube site sometime mid-March. https://www.youtube.com/user/NTMir This web site is a huge source of excellent information relating to NTM & MAC & Bronchiectasis etc..

Thanks for your message - I’m trying 7% saline in my nebulizer when I finish my 3% and I’ll know that I can expect it to bother my throat. I’m glad to hear it worked so well. I’ve used 3% for a few months and it usually makes me cough up stuff but not as much or as often as it should.

Have people had other side effects from the 7% saline?

I think I saw a question of yours on a NTM site. There is a water filter that removes 100% of NTM. It's the LifeStraw Go. See the research here "physical measures to reduce exposure to tap water- associated NTM" google search for the scientific article. I can't post the link on this forum.

Thanks for posting this. I saw the notification but felt it was perhaps not worth my time because after more than 10 years, I thought
I knew pretty much everything useful to know about inhaling saline. But I didn't . The presenter had a nice easy way of explaining with really good slides. Because I cannot use hypersonic saline (3% or 7%) and am using isotonic (.9 %), I was especially interested in
his discussion of the difference along with the graphs. Also he is leading a study re the benefits , if any, of inhaling saline at all. Imo worth the hour.

@rits Yes I found it to be a very good presentation. One thing I really found interesting was that for non-CF bronchiectasis it did not matter much what strength saline you use (0.9%, 3% or 7%) but for NTM infections the 7% was best. Of course some people's lungs can not tolerate the 7% so just use the highest % you can.
