Dear PRC Staff,
I remember the day I was told about PRC [Pain Rehabilitation Center] like it was yesterday. I had flown to FL from CA for a third opinion from Mayo Clinic. Quite honestly, I felt like it was my last resort for answers and a diagnosis. When the GI doctor suggested PRC I felt defeated. I remember going to my car in the exact parking lot I pull into every day and just crying. I felt like I was being called crazy and that my symptoms were made up. After some time and a lot of thought, I decided “What do I have to lose?” and decided to try the program. I wrote in my journal the day before intake about how I was feeling. I was skeptical, I was frustrated and thought “these people will never be able to help me” and “I know there is a specialist who will eventually find out what’s wrong with me.”
The first few days were a struggle for me. When I did not see immediate results, I started doubting things. However, I slowly started listening more and doing my part. Although my ego hates to admit it (HaHa!) I was wrong. For the first time in almost a year I took my first bite of food. For the first time in almost a year I ate a meal. For the first time in almost a year I got back to the gym. For the first time in SEVEN years, I started to feel normal, and for the first time in SEVEN years I felt like I had a future.
I walked into PRC depressed, unhappy and hopeless. I felt like my life was coming to an end, and that being on TPN [Total Parenteral Nutrition] was only sustainable for maybe another year. Now at the close of week three as I reflect back, I am actually excited about the future, and excited to be able to be alive and start living again.
To all of the PRC staff, thank you!
Thank you for supporting me through this journey with gentle yet straightforward and sometimes a little harsh (just kidding) guidance. Thank you for pushing me when I wouldn’t push myself. Thank you for giving me the tools I needed to start putting my life back together. Most of all, thank you for giving me hope. I look forward to the day I can send you that picture on a beautiful beach in Australia in my scuba gear.

1 Reaction@rwinney thank you for your lovely reply . Yes it’s a fabulous feeling . Having hope , light and strength again . I’m floored by the program not only for myself but watching my team mates progress and having new friends that are on the same journey . The program is so inclusive and detail oriented some of which I didn’t realize until afterwards . My heart overflows with gratitude for the whole team .
I was definitely concerned about leaving the safety bubble but trusted in the program and having made such huge improvements in my time there I was determined to not slide back . Plus all the fabulous aftercare !
I follow the protocols and revel in moving my body and gaining physical strength . I use my notes from lectures to review behavior and emotional issues and the planner !
Moderation and modification are key .
Good is good enough !
How long ago did you graduate ?

3 Reactions@kirstieg You hit on many great points. I admire your determination in keeping focused and understanding the importance of following the program. You know what they say - work the program and the program works for you.
I graduated 5 years ago. Hurt doesn't equal harm was a statement I really benefited from. So many good Sletten'isms, right?
Meet Rhonda @rlbooker5590, she is also a proud graduate of the FL PRC. You mention your teammates. It’s always nice to know more fellow alumni for ongoing support. Have you joined the private FB - Living the C group yet?

2 Reactions@jtboston Ouch, that's a tough one. It is a lot of money.
I live in New York and was going to Florida, also without out of state insurance coverage. What I did was delay my entry until the first of the year (it stunk waiting) to chose a new insurance plan that allowed out of state coverage. It was a slightly higher monthly premium but it was the best I could come up with in order to get to PRC. I had already been on Medicare so essentially everything was covered except my travel, hotel and meals.
Perhaps ask during your interview to be connected to any resources or funding assistance that may be available.

How are you? I had pain today that meds didn't help. My legs are so weak from PT. I keep trying to be positive but depression takes over sometimes.
@yram I am so sorry you are hurting but it’s good that you are doing p.t. I had some in-home but it ran out. I get stiff and sore from what seems like not much activity and lack much stamina. But I am staying positive and ready to embrace progress and improvement. Let’s motivate each other.

Yes I was just thinking that this evening. I was always very active but I feel weak from lack of activity. Is is sooo difficult to move about when in severe pain. I hope we both get well quickly. Prayers

1 Reaction@yram same here. Hang in there.
@yram I wanted to tell you that I started the PRC on Friday. I won’t lie to you, even though this was an “easy day,” the effort of getting there and home, and even walking around the limited amount that I did wore me out and I was very sore. The people that I met were all fantastic. The staff are dedicated and so skilled at what they do. I felt like I will get a comprehensive plan to change my life for the better tailored just for me. They really do understand and create the atmosphere for growth and success! I hope you come soon!
