Dear Friends,

We are thinking of you with best wishes for your well-being and appreciation for your friendship.

No one could have imagined the many changes that would take place shortly after we announced the 2020 dates for our educational series, Behind the Shields. As part of Mayo Clinic’s response to COVID-19, we are writing to let you know that Behind the Shields is canceled for this year. We look forward to providing updates about plans for the future.

In lieu of the meetings we had scheduled on our campuses in Arizona, Florida and Minnesota, we want you to know how grateful the people of Mayo Clinic are for your loyalty and generosity. Amid many challenges, Mayo Clinic is leading from a position of strength.

COVID-19 struck at a critical juncture. Arriving just months after the Board of Trustees approved the "Cure, Connect, Transform" vision for the path to 2030 and beyond, the pandemic has greatly accelerated the revolution in health care that Mayo Clinic is uniquely positioned to lead. The future is now, and the innovative care models of tomorrow are the expectations and essential services of today. Guided by our values and fueled by philanthropy, we are leading a revolution in health care when it is needed most. As Gianrico Farrugia, M.D., Mayo Clinic president and CEO, recently said: “We need to transform healthcare and do it in a way that is aligned with our values and secures our ability to serve patients through our three-shield mission.”

It is inspiring to learn of patients and friends who join with Mayo Clinic, supporting transformational priorities and our immediate initiatives to fight COVID-19. We respectfully invite your support and would be glad to answer questions and provide information.

Mayo Clinic was born in a storm – the 1883 tornado that devastated Rochester, Minnesota, and brought Drs. Will and Charlie Mayo and the Franciscan sisters together as partners in healing. Throughout our history, crisis has been a catalyst, from the G-suit and aeromedical discoveries that Mayo Clinic pioneered in World War II to the test for rapid detection of anthrax poisoning that Mayo developed in 2001.

We look ahead boldly, with your philanthropic partnership as a great encouragement. Please contact Jess Nelson LeMay at 844-330-5855 or 507-284-2800 or use the enclosed postage-paid envelope to learn more about Behind the Shields and supporting Mayo Clinic.
