Regenerative medicine offers an alternative to hip replacement

Hip replacement surgery is a common procedure that is necessary when the hip joint is worn or damaged. But what if the joint replacement could be avoided? Mayo Clinic's Center for Regenerative Medicine is pioneering alternatives for some patients, including younger adults.

On the Mayo Clinic Q&A podcast, Dr. Rafael Sierra, an orthopedic surgeon at Mayo Clinic, discusses who may be a candidate for a regenerative medicine approach to treating joint damage.

To practice safe social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic, this interview was conducted using video conferencing. The sound and video quality are representative of the technology used. For the safety of its patients, staff and visitors, Mayo Clinic has strict masking policies in place. Anyone shown without a mask was recorded prior to COVID-19 or recorded in an area not designated for patient care, where social distancing and other safety protocols were followed.

Does physical therapy for both of my knees help. Can an Exercycle at home help and what resistance do you suggest. However I am looking for help with both of my knees, but not going thru surgery. I'm looking for an alternative, maybe an injection. The only pain that I actually have is when I try going up and or down on steps, which is very rare. I'm 71 with terrible arthritis along with Neurapthy . Your suggestions will help and finally, are your procedures covered by Medicare and how long is the recovery/rehab??

Rory, I have terriable Bursitis in my right hip. I get a Steroid shot in the hip every 90 days as the Law allows. You might check into it. I also take a couple of Silver Sneaker ZOOM classes that really help! I do Silver Sneakers Yoga and Flex and Balance class! I just read about another group for Seniors called "Silver & Fit"! Again they do classes that are designed for seniors.
I know how the classes I take help me!
I'm the only guy in the class so I get teased by the ladies sometime! I know they help me and that's all i'm interested in!

Sad my brothers grandson was refused care at Mayo and had bilateral hip replacement at 15 and has other joint problems due to an extremely rare condition. Now he is in for a lifetime of replacements.

My doctors advised me against getting more than two shots of steroids into any joint! I use boron (6 mg three times a day) now and have NO arthritis/fibromyalgia/etc. pain in any of my joints.

I also started getting replacements at an early age and I'm 70 now. I have one hip replacement that has been in for more than 30 years and still looks brand new on X-ray and MRI! I'm sorry to hear of young people having to suffer like that.
