CAR-T cell Therapy: Side-effects and neurotoxicity

By Justin McClanahan, @JustinMcClanahan

Mayo Clinic neurologist, Michael Ruff, M.D., discusses some potential side-effects of CAR-T treatment. Learn more about how CAR-T affects the immune system and a side-effect similar to delirium called neurotoxicity.

Neurotoxicity can routinely cause difficulties with:

  • Attention
  • Carrying on conversation
  • Patient expressing themselves

In more rare cases, neurotoxicity can result in coma and or cerebral edema which can be life-threatening.

"Patients describe experiencing neurotoxicity to me as 'being in a foreign country and not speaking the language.'" Dr. Ruff says.

Learn more about how Mayo Clinic treats and prepares for this potential side-effect while creating a care plan for the patient prior to treatment in the video below.
