Dr. Landon Trost, specialist in male infertility and andrology, discusses success rates of vasectomy reversals.
Vasectomy reversal is surgery to undo a vasectomy. Pregnancy rates after vasectomy reversal will range from about 30 percent to over 90 percent, depending on the type of procedure. When a vasectomy reversal is successful, sperm may appear in the semen within a few weeks, but it can sometimes take a year or more.
Some factors on whether a reversal is successful include:
- Time since vasectomy
- Partner age
- Partner infertility
Vasectomy reversals sometimes fail if there is an underlying issue with the testicle that cannot be recognized during surgery or if a blockage develops sometime after surgery. Some men have a second-attempt vasectomy reversal surgery if the procedure does not work the first time.
This video is one of several in a series on vasectomy reversal discussing the condition, its treatment, costs, outcomes, and potential complications.
