Eleven years ago, I first discovered and joined an online group I didn’t even know existed—Mayo Clinic Connect.
It was my 13th year as a caregiver, and I knew my struggle with the isolation and weight of caregiving was becoming more and more of a personal challenge. I’d searched for some form of online caregiving support, but at the time could find nothing but infuriating (to me) feel-good stories of how the very rich and famous managed the demands of caregiving. There was nothing that represented the vast majority of us: regular, real-world, working caregivers.
What I did find, though, was something called Mayo Clinic Connect (Connect). I was attracted to the group simply because it was operated by Mayo Clinic, where my wife, MK, received exceptional neuro-oncology care for almost a decade and a half.
Right off the bat, I discovered Connect didn’t use the word “group” but referred to the online network as a “community.” I quickly discovered why. As I began e-meandering around, I realized Connect provided patient-to-patient connection and support for real people dealing with real diseases and their real-life impacts. I was taken by how wonderfully open the discussions were.
Embarrassingly, I admit I entered much like the proverbial bull in a china shop, posting about the life and frustrations of a caregiver, seeking help, and hoping to find a kindred spirit or two.
While Connect initially had no dedicated caregiving group, it did have a number of active members who often discussed caregiving as it related to their diseases, families, and themselves. It wasn’t long before I connected with the moderating team to talk about creating a support group dedicated to caregivers. Now there are multiple caregiver support groups!

Starting from nothing, our caregiving communities now have over 13,000 members! Plus, when I joined Connect, there were 32,000 members; today, Connect welcomes more than 400,000 registered members worldwide.
Over the years, I’ve gained untold help from Connect members, shed my isolation, found those kindred spirits I so needed. Now I enjoy not only the friendship of many community members but also the opportunity to offer suggestions, advice, helpful hacks, and a willing ear as a Connect volunteer mentor.
As you might imagine, after volunteering for 11 years, I’ve sometimes wondered if Connect is still a place where I can offer value. Then, the other day, I read this post:
In reply to @IndianaScott—“Thanks! This sounds pretty easy and very good! I have read all/most of your contributions here, and bless you for how long and well you cared for your wife. I think I can speak for everyone here when I say, thanks for all you contribute to give the rest of us strength and courage.”
Mayo Clinic Connect has truly been a godsend for me. I’d enjoy knowing, have you found the same—or other—benefits from Connect?
I end here as I always do:
Strength, Courage, & Peace.

I really appreciate all of the support of Scott and others who carry the burden of care giving and help others deal with the resulting isolation. Burdens are easier to carry when they are shared!

15 ReactionsGood Day,
Yes, Mayo Connect is a wonderful community. I have been so fortunate to be a part of this community. I began when I was diagnosed with cirrhosis and later liver cancer. I was able to connect with various people here who were going through similar issues and it helped me cope. I continue to get ideas and inspiration from many members here and I appreciate having a safe place to seek advice and comfort. Thank you all for your continued contributions. Please know that you are making a difference and helping others. Have a wonderful weekend.

8 ReactionsI have nothing but absolute admiration for someone who was a caregiver for over a decade. I watched (from states away) my dad's wife do it for a year, and my sister and I ultimately encouraged her to release herself and have him stay in an assisted living facility. Hearing about her washing bedding and clothing multiple times per day from effects from his radiation therapy, etc., sounded just overwhelming.
And additionally, your dedication to helping other caregivers here on Connect is so very valued and needed. Thanks for being there to lend a caring ear and pass along things you learned. So grateful for your years with this community, @IndianaScott.
