Meet Ed: Two-Time Kidney Transplant Recipient Builds a Life-Giving Legacy

Meet Ed, one of Mayo Clinic’s oldest and longest-surviving kidney transplant patients. Ed’s life has been shaped by the state of his kidney. He was sick as a child, and told by his doctors he most likely wouldn’t live to see his 16th birthday. They were wrong.

After coming to Mayo Clinic’s campus in Rochester in the mid-1960s, Ed received the gift of life twice from living donors in his family. Through the years, Ed made the habit of visiting other transplant recipients at Rochester Methodist Hospital and learned about the challenges transplant families faced, especially when they traveled to Rochester for their care. What a wonderful story. The Gift of Life that saved Ed now saves so many of us no matter which organ is failing. I am sure all of us who have received that gift want to "pay it forward" but most of cannot to the extent that Ed did.
It is such a happy story, his family must all be so proud of him and all he has done for others.
