Dr. Stephen Post, professor at Stony Brook University, and author of the book “Dignity for Deeply Forgetful People: How caregivers can meet the challenges of Alzheimer’s Disease”, was recently interviewed on “This Dementia Life” podcast, by Dementia Action Alliance, hosted by Chuck McClatchey.
In the podcast, Dr. Post shares that he dislikes the word dementia, and “that despite silence, or confusion, there is always a person; a continuing identity underneath everything that can be reached with good communication skills, with creative arts, with music. We should never think of these individuals as gone… we should honor them, and recognize the differences between them and us, are not all that great.”
Mr. McClatchey and Dr. Post discuss how his book is different; how it goes down a different path, one of hope, rather than the “tragedy narrative” that most living with dementia often hear and experience. Dr. Post suggests that he defines hope by “being open to surprises”.
