A Donor Story: Terri

Terri Knudson began donating blood early in her career at Mayo Clinic. “It was an easy way to make a huge difference and help others. Both of my daughters donate blood as well. Kristi, my oldest daughter, is O-negative, which is the universal blood type. My other daughter, Jessica, is O-positive, which is compatible with many other blood types.” When her son Mike fell ill it really brought home the need for blood.

In September 2021, her son, Mike, collapsed in his apartment and was transported to a hospital in St. Paul. “We learned he had a large brain tumor and would require emergency surgery. He was airlifted to Mayo Clinic where the surgeons specialize in this type of difficult surgery. Mike’s condition shocked us all as he has always been so young, healthy, and strong. It made us realize just how quickly our lives and health can change. We also realized that there are many others that are dealing with health issues every day and need blood products.” The next year consisted of numerous medical appointments and treatments. Currently, Mike is doing amazingly well, staying active, and enjoying life.

There are lots of ways that we can help others, but not many are as easy as donating blood. “Mayo makes it so simple to schedule an appointment to donate blood products based on your schedule, Terri says. The staff are always welcoming and appreciative of everyone who comes in to make sure it is a very positive experience.”
