The Power of Unity: How Katie's Family Surpassed 800 Donations

In a remarkable display of dedication, Mayo Clinic nursing education specialist Katie Brady-Schluttner and her family have collectively contributed over 800 donations, illustrating a profound commitment to saving lives.

Sparked by a personal motivation to give back, the family's donation story began decades ago with Katie. "I first donated blood my freshman year of college," says Katie. "After I transferred to a larger university, I started donating platelets." Her dedication remained strong after joining Mayo Clinic and starting a family with her husband.

Influenced by his work at IBM, which had a donor space, her husband joined the cause around 1988. Katie adds, "He claims I inspired him to start donating." Over time, he transitioned to donating platelets and stayed passionate about giving back even after leaving IBM.

The family's commitment evolved into friendly competition as their children began donating in high school. "I was the first family member to hit 100, 150, and 200 milestones, but the family competition ramped up each time I hit one," says Katie. Her sons, daughter, and daughter-in-law all get in on the family fun with a goal of positively impacting local patient’s lives. Their collective efforts are a testament to their shared values. With each member contributing to the family’s 800-plus donations, they inspire others to donate with their families and friends as well, further spreading the lifesaving practice of blood donation within their community.
