How does one know that Prostate cancer is progressing? What are the symptoms? What clues does one have that the end is near?

I have been diagnosed with it and live in a country that does not have specialists.

I also have primary myelofibrosis.

I'm not sure which one will be the end of me.

I am very fit and alert and 74 years old and still working.

Hey Rob, I’m an 81 year old who had prostrate cancer surgery two years ago. The cancer progression was determined by PSA and several biopsies. I decided on the robotic surgery while the cancer was still contained in the prostrate. I’m doing well and still very active living life as the precious gift that it is.

Exactly! Everything regarding medical jargon is ‘cloaked’ in acronyms lol (Spend most my time deciphering just this, no way around it 🤷‍♂️) We need an app for that! Cheers

Colleen.. thank's for all you do assisting this group. I wish there was more info. on 'drug holidays' or 'intermittent use of ADT'. I know there was one study in Japan I think; but not U.S. .. Also no discussion on say an older guy (over 75) taking Orgovyx ... as ADT alone... without surgery or radiation. IE: QOL concern given it seems longevity is about the same (difficult statistics as once someone hits 80, well how many years left won't vary much regardless of treatment). I'm wonder if 'ADT only' is a wise course; AND is there info. on after successful year of treatment; PSA pops up a bit (say from .1 to 3. ..) will another few months of restarted treatment be sufficient and then 'do nothing' beyond. May not be what supports the clinics; but wonder if it's a reasonable choice (and I'm referring to 'localized' PC, Gleason Score 8; but not metastasized. I have conflicting views from doctors; of 'radiation' (but I have a pacemaker); 'just the ADT and restart'; to 'you had a course; now enjoy life and don't think about it. I realize there's no perfect answer; open to reflections on this topic...thanks! I appreciate you! (Lurking so far; first post ever.)

Hi @seer, good point. (And good first post). I just did a quick search and currently there is no discussion dedicated to treatment holiday or taking a break in ADT specific to prostate cancer.

Might I suggest you start a new discussion in the Prostate Cancer group here: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/prostate-cancer/

To start a new discussion:
1. Go to the Prostate Cancer group https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/prostate-cancer/
2. Click “Start a new discussion” below the search field.
3. Enter a title/ask a question like “Anyone take a Treatment Holiday? Intermittent use of ADT
4. Enter more details in the message like you did here.
5. Click “Post discussion”

I’m confident this will be a topic of interest to many.
