Prostate Cancer Support Group Meeting

Wed, Jan 10, 2024
12:00pm to 1:30pm CT

Description

The Prostate Cancer Support Group is an in-person and virtual group for Mayo Clinic patients and their caregivers. The group meets monthly on the 2nd Wednesday of the month from noon to 1:30 pm CT.

Each month guest speakers from the Mayo Clinic oncology team provide education on specific topics related to prostate cancer. Following the presentation and Q & A time, members share information and experiences.

Our first speaker this year is Dr. Jarrett Richardson, a consultant in Psychiatry at Mayo Clinic. Dr. Richardson received his MD from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and completed his residency at Mayo Clinic. He will be speaking on Diagnosis and Treatment of Depression in Prostate Cancer. However, anyone who has experienced depression for any reason will benefit from Dr. Richardson’s presentation.

In-person space is limited, but all are welcome to participate via Zoom.

Jim - thank you for your comments on HDR; I had only heard of the LDR treatment. It sounds like LDR is an excellent option. We live in Asheville where the newer treatments for PCa are slow to make it to the mountains. We had a very advanced hospital, our only hospital, in our small town that was up for sale and I believe Mayo was being considered; however HCA purchased it so that they could have a healthcare monopoly in WNC. Now, Mission Hospital has zero Cancer Doctors.

Closer to those in the southeast part of the country is the City of Hope just south of Atlanta. It was formerly one of the hospitals in the Cancer Treatment Centers of America group. I went to the CTCA in Zion, IL, years ago when I had my cancer (not prostate), but my son (with prostate cancer) who lives in N.C. did go to the City of Hope in Atlanta. It treats only cancer patients. Zion was devoted to it's cancer patients from custodians to the Board of Directors, and you 'felt' it. It may be worth a call for second opinions or affirmation of your first diagnosis.
