Zoledronic Acid (Reclast) can I have just one infusion?

Posted by andreamayo @andreamayo, Feb 4 10:12pm

I had a Zoledronic Acid infusion 2 weeks (feeling fine). My spine average is -3.7 with my L3 at -4.2. I am a 56 yr old, otherwise fit and healthy, post menopausal woman. Wondering, if my scores improve by next year with weight training, can I stop getting infusions or will I get worse if I stop the drug?
Would I get worse because I took Zoledronic Acid and stopped, or just get worse as if I hadn't taken it all?
I'm wondering if I've taken a "no looking back" drug.
I hope my question makes sense.
Thank you,
Andrea

@andreamayo

I haven't had any bone building drugs prior, Zoledronic Acid if the first drug of my life. I have no other health concerns but my spine is -3.7 with the L4 at -4.2.

@andreamayo is there a reason you are doing Reclast and not doing a bone builder with spine at -3.7? Is this an insurance issue? Do you have an endocrinologist?

REPLY

Not an insurance issue as far as I know, I am in Canada. My doctor at the osteoporosis clinic only recommended Reclast, I don't have an Endo doctor.

@grrranny I have many health issues, including heart arrythmia, and lupus, and was able to do Tymlos (adjusting the dose and ramping up) and am doing Evenity. I would get a second opinion!

Thanks. This Endo *is* our second opinion. The reason he is having hubby do Reclast is because of his MGUS — which makes the others contra indicated.

I have not been investigating this directly as I'm not in your husbands situation but from what I've seen from a number of sources is that Forteo and Tymlos have not appeared to be causing any cancer issues in clinical use. There was some concern for certain types of cancer in rodent students. I believe I just heard on a talk one doctor saying he was using both of them without cancer concerns.
And Evenity has no cancer related concerns from clinical results or rodent studies.
At -4.2 Tscore he is definitely in the bone loss range where you need to build bone before using a bisphosphonate which will not bring about a great deal of bone density gains.

@andreamayo

Did you start with bone building drugs first and then move to Zoledronic Acid infusion?

Andrea, my endo Md started me with Evenity 1st a bone building drug and then I will move to Zoledronic (reclast) . It all depends on your DEXA numbers .

@grrranny the black box warning has been removed from Forteo and Tymlos. Not a single case of bone sarcoma and Forteo has been used a long time. For Forteo the two year limit has also been lifted and Tymlos no doubt will follow.

I had breast cancer and that often metastasizes to the bones. I had no concerns doing Tymlos and am now done and no cancer!

Thanks. Hubb's Tscore is -2.7.
Endo said he's not a candidate for Forteo because of his having radiation to the bone (19 treatments) for his MGUS two years ago (which put him in hospital for 10 days with very bad case of radiation-induced esophogitis, by the way ).
Endo said the Reclast will build bone, but at a little slower pace, and the main (possibly only) side effect will probably just be feeling like having a case of the flu for a few days.

Thank you, Windyshores. You've been a very valuable source of information, and have experienced much firsthand. Congratulations on your now being cancer-free!!
The problem the endo saw with Forteo and Tymlos was the fact that hubby had radiation to the spinal bones 2 years ago when plasmacytoma with MGUS was discovered during Kyphoplasty for burst T8 vertebral fracture.

Hello— I had history of low grade chondrosarcoma. Is Reclast infusion safe? Meaning it won’t trigger recurrence of CS? Please help— any insight you may have is greatly appreciated. Thank you
