Stool changes

Posted by TundeMagee @TundeMagee, Jun 14, 2016

Hello all,
I've had a strange yellow gelatinous material in my stool for the past few months, on and off, and I see it more often when I have diarrhea. It may happen once a week or more often, not sure, but I just see it more clearly when I have diarrhea, which happens not every day but maybe once a week or so. When my stool is solid, my poop is often a brownish-yellowish color, and I am afraid I may have something.

Here is a picture from today's stool. My entire diarrhea was yellow and this material was dispersed throughout, and I had a sore throat today as well (unrelated?):

Please let me know what direction I should take. The problem is that I've had yellowish stool for months, on and off, but today's sore throat is a new case, maybe unrelated?

My apologies if this is not appropriate to discuss but I noticed the last two days I have had black stools. I suffer from gerd and constant belching? Should I be worried about internal bleeding or no?

@trellg132, I moved your question about blood in stool to this existing discussion, so that you can connect with @astaingegerdm @bonnieh218 @jadillow and others

Here's an article from Mayo Clinic about possible causes of rectal bleeding.

Is the blood bright red? Have you had constipation lately?

I have an appointment with a specialist at the end of the month. I am at work now and had a sharp stabbing pain in one spot in my upper stomach for a few seconds. Possibly an ulcer but I’ve never had anything like this so I don’t know

Jadillow, do you take ibuprofen by chance? It causes internal bleeding. I used to take it
A lot and it caused a bleed in my small intestine. They had to cauterize my small intestine to stop the bleeding. I was weak for months after that.

@ trellg132- Hi! You are asking a very important question. Most of us don’t know what to do or think when we see blood in the stool. Then there is the question- is it mixed in, covering the stool or drops in the toilet? Also, the color of the blood- bright red, darker red or black (totally black) ? Another question- do you have pain anywhere in the stomach? Constipation? Known hemorrhoids? Are you anemic?
Lots of questions!
It may be something low on a worry scale, but you have to be evaluated.
Do you have a doctor you go to on a regular basis?
Looking forward to hear from you again.

On top I would say darker red pain not at the time no known hemorrhoid ,not anemic

@trellg132 - Thanks for the info! With deep red blood I would guess it originates between stomach and large intestine.
You should be examined by a doctor now to find out what’s causing this problem. Hope to hear from you with the findings.

I had a Clay-Colored stool 2 days ago. What changed is 1) I started eating lots of oatmeal, flaxseeds, chia seeds, etc. 2)I had my gallbladder removed through laproscopy 2 months ago. Almost 2 weeks ago I had a blood test and all my liver functions were very good. So, I don't know if anyone here had a similar problem, and do you think it's more about the change in diet? Thanks in advance for your help 🙏🏼

Hi imatine,
If the pale stools continue you should consult with a physician and rule out a bile duct blockage. It is possible that scar tissue is forming due to the recent removal of your gallbladder two months ago. It is very good news that your liver functions are good right now. I'm not a doctor, but I would think the diet you described may affect a stools firmness or the frequency of movements, but it shouldn't affect the color. Hopefully this issue has already resolved and you are back to normal.

@imatine It may or may not be of concern. If it is constant.. or just sometimes... You should let your surgeon know.
