Wrinkles on the back of my palm

Posted by Ali @muhammadali1951, May 4 5:16am

I am a male, 73. Lately, I have noticed that the skin on the back of my palm (hand) has developed wrinkles. The skin elsewhere is normal and unwrinkled. Could anyone help?

I have several skin conditions, so I check with my dermatologist about anything new or suspicious.

This is just my opinion, but I think as we get older (I'm 77) we lose the fat under our skin and the skin is thinner. I can see every blood vessel on the back of my hands and my skin looks thin and wrinkled. But if you feel there's something wrong , please ask your doctor.

Our skin loses the connective tissue just below it as we age. This causes sagging, wrinkles, bunching. However, dehydration can also cause this. Are you sure your living space isn't drier these days? Are you consuming about two full liters of fluids each day? Or more?

The place I live in has high humidity, but I use air conditioners, which makes the room dry. I think I should increase my water intake. Will taking vitamin E supplements help?

That I don't know. I know that Vit E is supposed to be 'good for' the skin, but I have never pursued it in my readings. If you have, and it makes sense, and multiple and credible sources say it does help, then by all means. Maybe cod liver oil is good? Avocados? Expensive and 'better' skin creams?

Thank you. Cod liver oil is a good suggestion.

@muhammadali1951 Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect, Ali. I know it can be disconcerting to get these visible signs we are getting older, isn't it?

I personally need to use soap and hand sanitizer a lot on my hands. That means what natural moisture that might be there, gets taken away. Add into that, just as @gloaming said, our skin thins as it ages, and we don't have many fat stores on our hands. I use a rich hand cream on my hands to help counteract the dryness and scaliness. It is a Vitamin E cream, and use a little at a time, but several applications, giving it time to absorb. I wear gloves a lot to protect my hands, especially when driving. And if I am doing outside work, I use leather gloves.

Please let us know how your hands respond to the ideas if increased hydration and topical protection!

73yo woman with dry skin and my hands have lost most natural bulk. The veins are more pronounced and skin is thin. I use AmLactin foot cream on them - its thicker and lasts longer than hand cream.
