Withdrawal from Trazodone. Need hope

Posted by extra @extra, Apr 22, 2023

I am on day 10 trying to wean off 50mg of Trazodone. Taking it to sleep about 6months. This is terrible. I am dizzy and weak. Very anxious. Sometimes nauseated. Have to force myself to eat Trouble walking. I am under a Dr’s care but no one helping. I got off Xanax easier. Anyone successful at this? I need hope.

Hi, I am doing great! But I haven't withdrawn from anything... I was just reading the posts....I take Amitriptyline and 1.5mg of lorazepam at night. Also take Magnesium glycinate to help with sleep. Alot of people don't know that Magnesium Glycinate helps sleep. Good luck to you!

Yes it is. It's the PURE brand.

I USE THE Magnesium glycinate gummies & they are delicious.
Why do you want to stop taking it if it works for you?
Are you sure the "side effects" are from MG's or something else?

I've been taking Trazadone 100mg for around 35 yrs. and want to stop. I've been having chronic back pain and just had fusion surgery hoping to stop the pain. Now I want to gradually wean off the Trazadone. I took Effexor for several years and it was difficult to stop that. How would these two meds compare when wanting to stop? Several times taking it, it didn't work and I had to take another 50mg to put me to sleep. I take melatonin and magnesium at bedtime also. I have some Ambien to take instead (not both)when I need extra sleep. Works wonders, but I'm afraid to take it regularly. Any advice or guidance is welcome. Thanks.

Okay, so before I begin this post I will say this: I am not a doctor, and if you are experiencing severe symptoms talk to your doctor, or psychologist or psychiatrist; PLEASE SEEK PROPER MEDICAL HELP AND GET YOUR SELF PROPERLY DIAGNOSED.
These are my personal opinions or suggestions, some suggestions might sound weird or silly or hippish-ish but they work for me, maybe they might not work for you, but them a try.

Hello! So I had been on Trazadone for the past 20 years, and it was prescribed to me to help deal with my anxiety and then several of my doctors suggested to get off it, mostly due to health concerns and possible neurological damage.
I am going through my third week of withdrawal and most ask me: "How are you still functioning or still sane after all this time?". Yes, somedays are bad, some are good, and I have had everything from non-stop crying to brain zaps, jitters and night sweats, for me I take things one day at a time and practice a lot of self-love and patience.

I'll start with some general advice and then go into what works for me.

BE PREPARED FOR POSSIBLE WITHDRAWAL SIDE-EFFECTS; WITHDRAWAL SEVEREITY AND WITHDRAWAL TIMELINE DEPENDS ON HOW LONG YOU HAVE BEEN TAKING IT AND WHAT KIND OF ANTI-DEPRESSANT YOU WERE ON. (Some withdrawal symptoms will be more severe, some less it all depends on how long you have been taking it. For example, you have been taking ABC for a month, then have to taper it

DON'T DO COLD TURKEY BY YOURSELF, CONSUALT A MEDCIAL PROFESSIONAL TO HELP YOU.
TAPERING IS THE BEST METHOD, AND GO SLOW AND DO A SLOW TAPER. (DO IT TOO FAST AND WITHDRAWAL WILL COME MUCH FASTER THAN EXPECTED)

GET A GOOD MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT GROUP AND ATTEND MEETINGS. (virtual or in-person)

LEARN TO MANAGE STRESS, AND ANIEXTY.

PRACTICE PROPER SLEEPING TECHNIQUES- GO TO BED AT THE SAME TIME EVERY NIGHT, AND GET UP AT THE SAME TIME EVERY MORNING; LIMIT COMPUTER TIME AND T.V. BEFORD BED (TURN OFF DEVICES AT LEAST 30 MINTUES TO AN HOUR BEFORE BEDTIME)
BLOCK OUT ANY BOTHERSOME LIGHT IN YOUR ROOM WITH BLACKOUT CURTAINS
INVEST IN A GOOD PAIR OF EARPLUGS AND A GOOD PILLOW
WHEN YOU WAKE UP, SPEND THE FIRST 10 MINTUES OF YOUR DAY IN THE SUN OR GET DIRECT SUNLIGHT. (No light, or lack of sunlight, invest in a light therapy box)

GET SOCIAL (No, not be a social media, but be social with real life people) BE AROUND PEOPLE, TALK TO THEM, JOIN A CLUB, JOIN A GYM; GET OUTSIDE AND ACTUALLY TALK TO PEOPLE.

Hello folks. My heart goes out to all of you that are suffering. I have been on trazodone for about a year 50mg. For a sleep aid. I wasn't faithful in taking it every day or even 50mg. Many times I would split the pills. Mostly 25mg 3 to 4 times a week. I started noticing a slight dizziness that would come and go. I didn't put 2and 2 together. Dizziness and brain fog off and on. I have no other he a health issues. No high BP or cholesterol. I took no meds for anything. In the past 3 months I developed GI issues. Gerd and gluten sensitivities. I take a 20 MG famotidine for my Gerd. I'm getting a good grasp on my GI issues but the trazodone side effects are really getting to me. The nausea can be terrible, chills, fatigue, jitters. I want off trazodone badly! My doctor doesn't think I need to step down my dosage, just cold turkey.0

I was prescribed Trazodone because it ia supposedly non-addictive?
I don't seem to have any side effects & have been taking it for about 3 months.
Do the side effects only occur when you try to stop taking Trazodone??

I have had some stomach ache issues but am now drinking Lactaid rather than milk
I thought I was better but still am having issues & now wondering if it is related
to the Trazodone?? advice? suggestions?? experiences?? K

I had a part 2 to this post but it disappear into cyber land... oh well! (It had great tips on dealing with anxiety and withdrawal symptoms.)
Again, before I begin. I am not a doctor or medical professional, PLEASE SEEK PROPER MEDICAL HELP AND GET DIAGNOSED.

Okay, this will be a short post.

Basically, how I deal with it is that I practice a lot of self-love, and patience and remind myself that this wouldn't last forever.
I have incorporated the practices of meditation, breathing exercises, and mindfulness practices.
Drink lots of herbal tea- chamomile and lavender.
I use a weighted blanket.
Being social and talking to people really helps and having "coping buddies" or a friend or loved one to text or call also helps.
Practicing proper sleep hygiene, getting lots of sunlight (or light therapy) and exercise helps.
Attending support groups, and NAMI groups are very helpful.
Yes, withdrawal is hard and the symptoms are unpleasant but the ickiness and insomnia don't last forever.
