Why is CKD Stage 3A downplayed? Am I over reacting to be concerned?

I just found out that I have Chronic Kidney Disease stage 3A. When I asked if I should be referred to a Nephrologist, I was basically admonished by my PCP. I was told I've had it for years and it's being monitored and at this point I need to wait for my next PCP visit. Great. Thanks for letting me know. Maybe I was at stage 1 or 2. Who knows lets wait until I hit stage 4. I met with a Urologist yesterday and it's no big deal. I'm 73 so it's to be expected. Jeesh!!

Agreed! Staying hydrated is major, along with diet and exercise. Managing stress is easier said than done :-)! Like you, my CKD is not from diabetes. I have had CKD for nearly 40 years; it is IgA Nephropathy, and my nephrologist expected me to be on dialysis years ago. Until recently, there were no medications to treat this, so I had to rely on hydration, etc. (and probably a bit of luck). Also, like you, my systolic pressure has decreased with Farxiga. I am on a remote BP monitor to track it. Since I am not diabetic, I resisted taking it (and the mentioned side effects were definitely intimidating!). However, I hope to continue on it with good results for both kidneys and heart.

I am curious, though, why did you switch from Jardiance to Farxiga? My doctor indicated that they were both basically the same. I made the decision based on cost.

@bettycll My insurance company was able to get a better deal with Farxiga than Jardiance. Jardiance was pricey so I had to get 25 mg pills and split them to 12.5 mg; with Farxiga (10 mg) I have pill splitters that I don't need now. Thankfully I tested negative for amylodosis and IgA nephropathy; I do have IgA Kappa FLC Smouldering Multiple Myeloma though....if it morphs from pre- to cancer then I will likely go off SGLT2 meds because the cancer treatments tend to lower blood pressure. Getting older (72) is not for wimps.

@kayabbott Money was my primary reason also for choosing Farxiga over Jardiance - although my nephrologist was fine with either. Indeed, getting older is NOT for wimps!! At 78 I was diagnosed with CLL (hence my name here!), so I joined MCC. However, I soon realized that I can also join support groups for CKD, heart rhythm conditions, etc. At this point I am not in any treatments for my leukemia. I hope your Myeloma will NOT morph into cancer requiring treatment. Although I am battling multiple issues, I did make it to 80. I just hope to not add any more diagnoses in this decade! Good luck!

@bettycll I almost got in a clinical trial to stop my SMM from progressing, but they wanted an eGFR of 60 or higher and mine was 32-40. I also collect maladies so contribute on TBIs, prostate cancer (hubby), celiac, collitis, MM, covid (2023), CKD, and pretty much everything but hoof and mouth disease. Being 72 that may hit me next. If/when SMM becomes MM, the treatments for it are a lot more targeted and fewer side effects than some of the old treatments (and hopefully good enough that BM transplants will gradually fade into the past)
