Why do I have to see a rheumatologist in my home state?
Mayo Rochester told me I had to see a doctor from my home state of Wisconsin the second opinion I requested. Has anyone had this problem?

@julie0292 Can you explain a little more? Had you already seen a rheumatologist at home, or do you have an assigned one at Mayo?

3 ReactionsI think it might be to medication’s. There are some medications that require required strict monetary, and your state needs to be in charge is what I was told

2 Reactions@minnesota10 same is the case in Canada. Each Province is under a provincial health insurance plan and medications, tests, procedures, etc. have to be approved by the respective provincial government.
@sueinmn
I have a rheumatologist that diagnosed me at Mayo Clinic in Onalaska, WI. I want a second opinion from a rheumatologist at Mayo Rochester. They told me I need to see someone in Wisconsin.
@minnesota10
So you think it has something to do with medications?
@julie0292 I can't speak directly to your situation, but I know that Mayo Clinic in Rochester receives more requests for service than they can handle in some departments. Perhaps they feel your situation can be managed in a more timely manner locally?
It is also possible that your insurance may cover a local clinic, but not the one in Minnesota.
Was your request declined when you contacted Mayo Rochester directly, or did you ask the local Clinic to refer you ?

Yes. I found out sometime ago every state has different laws on medication’s. I was put on one and they asked for my drivers license. I never had that happen before. What I found out they consider it to be a low-grade drug deal.
@sueinmn Both, direct call and referral. Insurance coverage is not a problem.
@julie0292 Did you directly ask them the reason for refusal? That would be my first step. What, in particular, do you feel requires a second opinion?
I was advised that the rheumatology group at Mayo functions as a consulting rheumatologist as part of a comprehensive care team. They then want you to have your local rheumatologist be your regular provider. This has worked well for me so far. My diagnosis from Mayo pulmonologist and rheumatology led to a treatment plan that was different than what my local had planned to start me on. But then the local rheumatologist was able to deliver my care per the Mayo advised plan. He is able to get on the Mayo portal to get info etc.
This has worked well so far. It does require you’re able to get a good rheumatologist for your local care. My local is still 90 miles from me. Shortage of that specialty in some areas! Hope this is helpful and accurate re how I understand this re Mayo. I get my Mayo care in Rochester.
