who called 911
Who Called 911?
The other day, I finally got the official go-ahead to take a shower by myself. No sneaking involved—doctor approved and Jeri sanctioned. A big milestone, considering I’d spent the last couple months with her practically guarding the bathroom door like I might dive headfirst into danger at any moment.
So, with full permission, I stepped into the shower solo. It felt good—normal, even. But halfway through, I heard this strange alarm. Not my phone, not the microwave, not even the smoke detector (which, let’s be honest, I’ve triggered before). This was something new. I gave it the old ignore-and-keep-washing strategy.
Meanwhile, unknown to me, Jeri had walked back into the bathroom and popped in to check on me—also fully approved by her self-assigned role as Captain of Post-Transplant Security. She cracked the door, saw I was upright, doing just fine, and left.
Fast forward ten minutes. I’m out, dried off, fully dressed, and feeling good. Then the doorbell rings.
I open the door and there stands a local police officer, looking like he’s half-expecting to find someone face down in the hallway.
“Sir, are you alright?” he asks.
I blink. “Yeah, I’m fine. Why?”
“Your Apple Watch called 911. Said you had a hard fall.”
Now, this was a head-scratcher. I hadn’t fallen. I hadn’t even stumbled. Then it hit me—I’d taken my watch off before the shower and must’ve dropped it on the bathroom counter a little too hard. Apparently, my watch is a drama queen and thought I’d taken a nosedive.
Jeri walked in right about then, having also received the fall alert. She gave me a once-over, then explained to the officer that she’d already checked on me during the shower and confirmed—no fall, no drama, just one overreacting piece of technology.
So now we know: if my watch hits the tile, it assumes I’ve gone down like a sack of potatoes and sends the cavalry. I guess that’s comforting… and a little embarrassing. At least I was fully dressed when the cop showed up.
Lesson learned—next time, place the watch down gently. Or better yet, let it shower too. It seems to get upset when left out.
