Which Breast Implants?

Posted by tduser2023 @tduser2023, Oct 19, 2023

Hi there,

I was diagnosed in 2019 on right side, mastectomy was one and then implant was placed( silicon, mentor textured). After few weeks of implant placed I have some pressure and puffiness on side where implant was placed but I was told that it will go way as I heal and I took it positive and it has reduced as well. I may be over sensitive as it was foreign part.

Even after 4 years I still feel pressure, heaviness when I do long drive in car or I take long flight or spend much time in sun. But that is still bearable and I can manage.

Now this month I diagnosed on left side - luck is not in favor, what to do….:(

I met with plastic surgeon and I was suggested replace on both side silicon implant without textured. I was told that textured may cause some of side effects and life is 10 Years and again I may have to go to surgery. There are options which has more longevity like 30 to 40 years or so and i was offered to place new implant on on both side.

Here are some dillema, I have and not able to find answer in this tuff time.

1, Should I do on both side as I manageable problem with right side?
2, If I go with implant on both side which brand, type is better? As I want to avoid future surgery as I am almost over with 5 years life on right side implants.

If anybody has any suggestions please provide details or share experience. It will really help.

Thanks everyone.

I will only say that textured are not used at the City of Hope when I wentvto my plastics doctor.
I have only had mine in for 10 months. I was told 10 years is usually when they are replaced.
I expect more will reply. I have not had side effects as you describe, but I will say my doc said it is the norm for the implants to finally become part of me after 6 or more months

I have also heard that the textured implants are not used much any longer. My opinion would be to have both breast implants done at the same time. I would not like to repeat the surgery again if I could be done in one surgery. I have smooth silicone implants and I'm very happy. No problems thus far.

Mayo doesn't offer the textured implants anymore. I received Mentor silicone in May 2022 during my DMX with immediate recon. If you are having problems on the right side and now are going in to treat the left, you have a lot of options to consider. Implants have a "shelf" life and will have to be removed/replaced at some point in time, so replacing the right side at the same time as left could be beneficial. DIEP flap recon also may be an option. https://www.breastcancer.org/treatment/surgery/breast-reconstruction/types/autologous-flap/diep
Best wishes and gather all info you can from you doctor(s) so you can make the most informed decision for yourself!

Textured implant have been removed free of charge by implant companies. I would not put silicon in. I have saline only because in 1994 my silicon ones burst and silicone traveled under my arms and into my organs. I have mri to prove it. After my breast cancer diagnosis I had saline implants replaced with new ones. But you should get textured implants out. Replaced by implant company free. Under ten years old company pays for surgery too.

Textured implants have been recalled. Company pays toward surgery and I believe for new implants. Call manufacturer. I have had implants for years. I got breast cancer and had them removed and new ones alid in same pocket at surgery. They are smooth saline ones. So far no problems with them. I had bad rupture in 1994 with silicon implants that ruptured. Silicon traveled into my underarms and into my kidneys and liver. I still have mri to prove it. Anyway, I would never have silicon implants again only saline.

Again textured implants have been recalled by manufacturer. They pay for surgery and new implants put in. I am surprised someone used them. It has been I believe at least 5 years since they have been off market. Check with the manufacturer. City of hope does not use them because they caused problems. I do not know any plastic board certified doc that would put them in. It is not normal to have the reaction to implants you are having. I suggest you call manufacturer and they should tell you about recall and paying for explanation and replacement of textured ones with smooth ones. Good luck

City of Hope did not offer saline. My doctor feels silicone is safe and will last possibly 10 years. No textured he said ever.

I got saline in 1994 because my silicon ruptured twice and the silicon went through my body beyond the breasts(I have mri to prove it) saline lasted years before I changed to new ones. I changed every 10 years. 2007 and just changed to new ones this year with my breast cancer surgery. I personally would not do silicon again.
