What’s your funny favorite saying for tough times?

Posted by methel @methel, Jul 11, 2025

When things are tough, I try to laugh a little to boost my spirits. These are my favorite spirit-booster sayings, which I repeat as necessary:
“When the going gets tough, the tough go shopping.”

And “When you are going through he**, keep going.”

I heard this in Texas:
“ There ain’t a horse that caint
be rode, there ain’t a rider that caint be throw’d”!
… heard this too:
“If at first you don’t succeed,
remove all evidence you tried.”

God bless you 💕

Here are some light-hearted and funny sayings that can help bring a smile during difficult times:
"When life gives you lemons, just add vodka!"
"I’m on the patch right now. It’s a chocolate patch."
"If at first you don’t succeed, then skydiving definitely isn’t for you."
"I’m not arguing, I’m just explaining why I’m right."
"Life is short. Smile while you still have teeth!"
"I told my therapist about my procrastination issues. We’ll talk about it next week."
"The road to success is dotted with many tempting parking spaces."
"If you think you are too small to be effective, you have never been in bed with a mosquito."
"I’m not lazy, I’m just on energy-saving mode."
"Sometimes you just have to put on your big girl/boy pants and get over it. But first, let me have a snack."
These sayings can serve as a reminder to find humor even in tough situations, helping to lighten the mood and provide a little perspective.

“Courage, Camille”. That’s what my mother used to say to me for encouragement and now I say to myself and to one of my friends. I often wondered where that phrase originated as I’ve heard it used in other scenarios. It most likely originated with Alexandre Dumas in his novel, The Lady of the Camillias”. There were many films over the years based on this novel so perhaps it originated in one of the films? I don’t know but it sure reminds me of my mother.

From my late mother:
"They said, 'Cheer up - things could be worse.' So I cheered up, and sure enough, things got worse."

I love this one when thinking of bad behavior:
When one friend calls you a jackass, it's one thing. But when 5 friends call you a jackass, it's time to buy a saddle!
