Anyone have kidney removal before at time of transplant?
I'm in end stage CKD, expected to have both kidneys removed along with both ureters either prior to transplant or at the same time. Excited and scared both. Anyone have similar surgery done and how do you fair please?

@jongreco welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. People that I know who have had kidney transplants did not have their native kidneys and ureters removed. I can’t imagine they would be removed prior to transplant. Are you on dialysis? Do you have a living kidney donor?
When my fil had his transplant my daughter was his living kidney donor. She had about a week of post surgical recovery and by 4 - 6 weeks was completely back to normal. I wish you all the best for you upcoming surgery.

1 ReactionYes, I had both kidneys removed prior to my transplant. My Father was my Doner, he was 61 years at the time of our transplant & I was 30 yrs.
I have had no problems since. I am now going on my 43rd year of a successful Transplant. Thank you Dad, for giving me another chance at life!
You were "My Gift Of Life" ❤️
My Father lived a very good & long life. He passed away at 92yrs. I am now 73yrs & my/his kidney is still going strong!
I pray this will give others Hope 🙏

4 Reactions@ptiernanswfl Thank you much for the reply. Did your double nephrectomy occur prior t transplant or at the same time? If prior, how long was your recovery after the nephrectomy? I have had bilateral nephrostomy tubes for the last 15 months now and I end up getting a kidney infection nearly every 5 weeks (14 in the last 15 months) and I think they are going to take my kidneys out soon, so just checking on recovery thoughts. I'm 55 and in fair health currently.
Yes, I had a Splenectomy and double Nephrectomy surgery 6 weeks prior to my Kidney Transplant.
I was on Dialysis about one year.
I asked why they were doing this & they replied that it would be advantageous for when I was transplanted, so my Father's Kidney would be accepted.
Remember though, this was performed in November of 1983
@ptiernanswfl Thank you very much. Glad all went with you though.
