What supplements are good for you as a diabetic?

I have been working really hard to get my A1C number down since diagnosed. 10.1 at diagnosis – last week 5.8 . I’ve been really watching what I eat, writing items down and exercising. I now want to start adding supplements that may help. One of those suggested is berberine. What is the best source to purchase it and how much do I take? i’ve read a little about it, but can’t always believe what I read on facebook.

I have tested my fasting blood sugar since I was diagnosed 13 years ago, and I have studied and learned about my numbers rising and falling as i eat a low carb diet with many vegetables, mostly from my garden in the summer. When the number is higher in the morning, I know to eat a healthy, careful diet, and I cook my own delicious meals every day. I can take one or two Metformin in the evening, as prescribed by an endocrinologist, which may help some, but mainly it is the diet and some exercise or activity which keeps the numbers near normal in the morning, and stay below 200 in the evening. My AIC right now is 6.8 but it has been as low as 6.3. I would like to get it lower but eat too much fat in my diet to balance the meals. In the beginning I lost 18 pounds giving up sugar and white bread, and have lost another 6 pounds this year without being to walk much due to back surgery. Diet and exercise is the key to good control and I recommend a wide variety in a balanced diet. I have studied nutrition all my adult life. I never depend on pills or test apparatus. My doctor has never advised me what to do but he did send me to a nutritionist. I have studied about diabetes at the college level and know it can be awful but the only problem I am dealing with right now is a fat waist. I am working on it. You are what you eat. Dorisena

@dorisena I too put cinnamon on my oatmeal and mix it into my yogurt. I use Ceylon cinnamon which is difficult to find except on amazon and in Whole Foods — the price at Amazon just got reduced too. Ceylon cinnamon is called “true cinnamon”. It is milder tasting than other cinnamons so you can use more. The other cinnamons can be harmful in large quantities, particularly to the liver. My sister puts cinnamon in her coffee too.

I had an appointment with my endocrinologist on Monday. I asked him about cinnamon and he felt that the amount you would need to make a difference would be considerably more than most people could possibly use. He is an extremely well regarded doctor but I’m not sure I agree with him on this. I have been using quite a bit of the Ceylon cinnamon and my A1c was 5.8 despite not following a low carb diet very well. I guess it is possible that I “reversed” my diabetes since I have lost a very considerable amount of weight.

Congratulations, JK, on your good A1C level and being able to eat a cookie now and then. I also believe it is possible to reverse diabetes but most people do not like to stay on the diet that gives such good success. Also you must exercise, which is not as much fun in the winter. I never was an athlete and loved reading a good book with a bowl of apples at my side. I am working on it. Dorisena

There isn't much I haven't experienced in the past about diabetes watching my late husband literally eat himself to his death. He had an eating disorder and stopped at a fast food or restaurant daily, in addition to my good cooking. When I quit baking sweets, he ate out as much as possible, and considered donuts his go to snack. He was obese, His eyes declined, his physical health declined, he had dementia, and he had prostate cancer and didn't stay on the treatment. He died of a tumor growing up his spine and was paralysed.
It was horrible to watch him in pain and denial, and he never reconciled to me or his diseases. You can imagine how it affected me after fifty years of marriage, and how I learned about diabetes first hand before I was diagnosed. Yes, you can reverse diabetes, especially if you can be active and learn to cook well. Many doctors do not believe this, however. And many do not teach their patients. Dorisena

Piping Rock has a Berberine 500 mg at a very reasonable price. On Amazon you can get very potent (1200mg)Berberine HCL. Carfuly monitor your sugar. It can lower you sugar level to much. So it takes few days to establish proper dosage

Based on my low blood sugar problems of years ago, I wouldn't consider any supplements that lower blood sugar too much because of the danger of too low numbers if you have a spell. In the 1970's my doctor seemed to understand little about low blood sugar and only told me to eat often and carry cheese. A paramedic explained what was happening to my body, and I learned to eat six times a day and cut the carbs, although I didn't know why it helped. A nutrition book I read at the time said people with low blood sugar are neurotic. My reply was that low blood sugar can make a person neurotic, as it is really scary to be dizzy and not know what you are doing. I finally realized that my episodes were triggered by stress and with stress control and eating changes, the problem went away. I have eaten every four hours ever since and was surprised when diagnosed with diabetes years later. So I would not consider supplements that lower blood sugar as a regimen without depending on diet and exercise as the essential plan for controlling blood sugar. It gets easy and improves health generally, and I don't consider myself a sick person. At age 85, I am outliving my friends. Dorisena

He has changed to a mandatory breakfast steadfastly and has had no more problems. Skipping breakfast for some people can be dangerous and is not recommended. Several in my family carry food in our vehicles so we don't go long hours without food. Prevention can be the cure for bad habits. We are learning. Dorisena

Thanks, Susu. This isolation has given me time to reminisce about my long past and lessons learned. I have lost my sister and brother, as well as many friends, so I hope to reach out to others to help in any way I can, and to cure my loneliness if possible. I have plenty of work I can do at home, but want to be involved with people and to learn more each day. I am thankful to not be in a wheelchair so the challenge of living alone keeps me going. I still like to cook, but make a pot of food and eat leftovers to be more efficient. I still miss working with young students and teaching them how to make things. I need to set new goals for the coming years. Dorisena

More than likely the insulin was not the problem, but the incompetency of the healthcare.

I do not understand your reasoning at all and your and your opinion of my condition. Are you suggesting that I do not have diabetes or that I could not be lowering my blood sugar to a desirable point where I feel well? Are you thinking that because I am not on medicine and not sick my doctor is incompetent? No, he doesn't bother to teach me because the blood sugar numbers are satisfactory to him and I am doing well. But I know that I can do even better and protect myself against sight damage, hearing loss, and dementia which can be a result of poor diabetes management. I encourage you to study the matter further. Dorisena

I have had insulin problems for forty years now, and began with nausea and dizzy spells if I smelled food or had an adrenaline rush from fear or anxiety. I walked in front of cars and didn't know where I was at times until I ate something to stop the spells. The doctor didn't seem to know much but sent me for the "sugar test" where my blood sugar dropped to 35 on the report. I learned how to manage the problem from a paramedic and from a neighbor whose friend gave her a suggested diet. At that time there was little known about low blood sugar problems so I "cured" myself with diet and stress reduction, and I walked a lot in addition to the gardening. I did not know that my body would change to high blood sugar problems 25 years later as the insulin worked less efficiently in my body. I hope I can live out my life without getting type one diabetes when the insulin doesn't work at all. Then I would need shots, I know. I am happy to share my success with people who are struggling. It is wonderful to not be sick with this disorder. Dorisena

I now use berberine (with my doctor's permission), which does me just as much good as metformin did and without any negative side effects. Of course, as you no doubt know, "pills" (whether meds or supplements) aren't meant to take the place of exercise and a sensible diet for us type 2ers. But they can be a beneficial addition to exercise and a proper diet. Also helpful for my numbers are ceylon cinnamon (NOT grocery store cinnamon) and chromium. DO TEST your glucose levels as often as your doctor recommends, because you must keep tract of them to prevent your levels from being too high or too low! My doctors want me to keep them between 80 and 120, but you do as your doctor says. Testing is how you learn how much of a supplement you need without overdoing. Best wishes to you.

Yes, I have ised those supplements too but find a diabetic diet is more effective keeping my A1C around 7.0
