What restrictions with water usage and ice cubes should I be following

Posted by rozie83 @rozie83, Feb 7 12:30pm

Hi again,

I have mild bronchiectasis and do airway clearance with an Arobika twice a day. Three to four afternoons a week I use a nebulizer with 3% saline. I do get up mucus all during the day.
I also have pseudomonas which I am told is not contagious.
I have read about water restrictions and care. I'm interested in what people do to have safe drinking water, and if I should be doing anything. My drinking water in my condo is filtered. I chew on a lot of ice cubes which are made from the filtered water.
I appreciate any information. Thanks you. Roz

For drinking water, I use LifeStraw pitcher at home and water bottle for traveling. Dentist advised against chewing ice as it can cause fractures in teeth.

Thank you. I'll try it. I figured chewing ice is not good for your teeth. I'll have to find a replacement. Roz

Mayo and Cleveland both said hot tubs should be avoided so I stopped going to a heated pool for exercise

I would avoid thefiltered water from your condo since the bacteria that many of us are susceptible to can accumulate in filter systems. A LifeStraw pitcher is on my counter that I use it for tea, coffee and making ice-cubes, etc. I have a LifeFilter squirt bottle for travelling or drink bottled water if it's labelled spring water. These are precautions for MAC bateria so I"m not sure it they aply to pseudomonas. Check discussion posts on pseudomonas.

I disinfect my showerhead and kitchen faucet when I remember every couple of months. You can find older discussion posts about how different people do this.

@mholm Thank you. This was very helpful. The filtered water I have comes from my own unit under the sink. I don't know how pure it is. I use the hot water all the time. I could replace it with something else. Just another adjustment. Roz

@janetexmsrrose Thank you. It's good to know although I haven't gone to the pool or hot tub in my building for several years. I have been soaking my legs to combat night cramping in my own whirlpool tub. Only my legs go in with epsom salt. Roz

@rozie83 I bought a SafeWater filter (available on Amazon) for my kitchen tap. It works to filter out MAC and Legionella. I just unscrewed the regular tap aerator and put the SafeWater filter on. The filter needs to be changed every 3 to 6 months. I can now use the tap water for cooking, cleaning, drinking, etc. I also have a LifeStraw pitcher because I like the taste of bottled water better than tap water and I pour the bottled water through the pitcher. I use it for drinking, making tea, etc.

Thank you, Linda. My filter system has two filters that are changed regularly. Is there a way to test the water to see what might be harboring there? Roz

@rozie83 It's my understanding that regular water filtration systems don't filter out down to 0.2 microns which is what's required for MAC. That's why many people here, including myself, have special water filters capable of filtering down to that level. Several companies make them but I found the SafeWater filter was easiest for me both for the tap and one for the shower.

There have been other discussions in separate posts regarding water filtration and testing. Someone had posted one link for a testing company at mytapscore.com/products/mycobacterium-water-test I think that test costs about $439.00. If you type that into your browser, it should come up. I'm sure there are others too.
