Quantity of medication Forteo pin administers with "one click"

What quantity of medication does the Forteo pin administer with “one click“?

I’m having trouble tolerating Forteo.

I was thinking you could administer the Forteo up to one click, then withdraw the needle and do the rest of it the next day.

Has anyone ever done that ?

It would be nice to know how much medication you were administering to yourself.

Blessings,
CC

@mayblin

Since my low blood pressure problem lasted 24/7, I didn't do hydration timing with forteo dosing, just drank throughout the day. After the initial one and a half months of 12 cups liquid, I went back to 10 cups (without extra salt, and i count all liquid such tea, decaf coffee, soup etc) per day. I didn't have GI problem so eating had been normal through out. Guess low blood pressure at beginning was the only side effects for me. Like some member felt, I will miss forteo after stopping it, since I felt safe on it.

I was taking 1000-1200mg calcium from food mainly from dairy for the first half of treatment. Later after discussing with my endo, we both felt diversifying calcium source is a good idea. And since I'm not that big, I'm taking 1000mg or so daily now, about 50% from dairy (not sure if it's still too much), remainder from dark leafy veggies, tofu, and bone in sardines etc. I know we have to have calcium. As far as the best source and the amount, I have doubts from time to time. As with many aspects of dealing with osteoporosis, I often second guess what am I doing.

Best luck with your treatment!

mayblin, appreciate your reply. What salty food did you eat? Did you add salt to your water?
Was salt spread throughout the day or just before injection?

@leeosteo if your blood pressure isn't low, you don't need salt. You can get a blood pressure cuff to see what is happening with bp after you inject the med.

Even without a med, my bp can be 94 systolic so bp was an issue for me with Tymlos. But if someone has high bp, they should probably avoid salt!

Talk to your doc about this. My endo and nephrologist both urged me to increase salt and hydration. This recommendation came from doctors for me but it would be good to check your bp and then check with a doctor.

Thanks windyshores. Normally, I consume only 4-6 cups of water/fluid a day. So it's very common for me to become dehydrated and in turn have low BP. But, it's good to know that if I stay in normal BP range I don't have to worry about the salt. I do have a BP monitor at home. Thanks for the tip on measuring BP after injection!

leeosteo, i added salt to water (i have insulin resistance and can’t eat a lot of salty snacks), mostly when i feel very tired and bp reading confirmed low bp. My recollection is maybe 1-2 times per day during that period of time.

windyshores summed up really well what to look out for and to do.

Lying down helps i think it makes sure the brain gets enough blood. That’s probably why injection before bedtime maybe a good idea to start forteo.

@mayblin I am wondering if the fact that I felt better if I got up and moved around or walked, versus resting, was because that exercise raised my blood pressure. This is complicated and different for each person. It took me 6 months to figure out I was better off moving and being active! Basically we all have to play around with these things and find what works best!

I sure had a similar feel. The couple time when I drove 45 minutes in traffic to docs office, the readings were both normal there. When adrenaline are up when we move about may help the low BP too.. I have 2 different BP machines, one of which has Bluetooth sync to phone app. I showed the doc my readings at home which were all low without particular pattern

Last night I ate salt before injecting Forteo.

In the middle of the night the dog needed to go out, I was surprised because I could hardly navigate and even had trouble talking.

I have never experienced anything like this since I started Forteo in December.

This morning I feel okay.

My blood pressure was 111/87.

Thanks for all your help.

@06111945cc today I have a 28-day old forteo pen and out of curiosity i played with it. Found a few interesting but useless (who knows?) facts. The pen has 4 extra doses after 28 day usage. Manufacturer asks us to toss after 28 days. I did for a couple times used 1-2 doses beyond 28 days due to shipment delay or traveling.

When loading the liquid medicine by pulling the plunger, if i do it very slowly with even speed, I do hear clicks at almost even intervals, max of 7 clicks (till the red line shows up) was what I heard. As a member (gently?) pointed out, if you don't fully load the pen till the red line shows up, you won't be able to deliver the (any) dose.

When delivering the medicine by pushing the plunger, I won't hear the click till about mid-way. After mid-way, there are bunch of clicks. I let the medicine drops fall on a parchment paper and notice the two droplets (before midway and after) are roughly similar in size. But there is no way for me to measure them.

So in reality it's not feasible to do less dose. First it won't be accurate. Second, one's hand needs to be very steady for the approximate half dose, which is very hard.

Hope you get pass through this initial somewhat challenging period soon!

maybin,

Boy!
You are a regular Sherlock.

Thank you for your investigation.

I do feel confident that this medication is making a difference on my bones. So, I’ll stick with it.

Maybe every other day will work for me.
