What is Your Tolerance for Hemoptysis?
I have nodular MAC, which so far I have been able to treat with nebulizing and a Vest. However, in recent months, I have had bouts of hemoptysis. In the past, I have immediately stopped nebulizing and using the Vest for several days. Moreover, to avoid hemoptysis, I have for the most part have scaled back to 3 percent saline. Unfortunately my scans now show my MAC is worsening. I would like to go back to 7 percent saline. My question is this. If you just have a few red streaks in your sputum, do you stop nebulizing? Or do you continue as long as you are showing only small streaks of blood on occasion? The most hemoptysis I’ve had is one or two teaspoons of blood. I obviously pause nebulizing when that occur. I just wonder if there can be some tolerance at a lesser point, or if I should take the small streaks as a warning and stop. Any advice on this is appreciated. Many thanks!

I also get hemoptysis with the 7%. I experimented and found I could do 3 days of 3%, one day of 7%, and so on. I might have a tiny spot of blood after 10-12 weeks where I stop the ACT for a day or two and start again.

2 Reactions@juliea55, someone on this chat, Irenea8 I think, posted about hemoptysis and how taking Nutricost K2-MK4 stopped it for her, she also takes K2-MK7 every day. Personally, I started taking it (K2-MK4 and K2-MK7) every day when I started nebbing 7% and haven't had issues. Maybe you want to look into it, if it does not interfere with any meds you might be on? When I talked to my pulmo about it, he said it was fine to take it every day.

I take two K2-MK4 every day but not the MK7. If you take vitamin D3 you need to also take K2. And yes it is helpful if you have a bleeding issue and tend to thin blood.

1 Reaction@irenea8, oops sorry I misremembered. You take two because you feel one is not enough? and is it just your preference not to take MK7? I am just curious. I take vitamin D3 combined with MK7 (it just comes this way) in the morning and I take 1 capsule of MK4 with diner. It seems to be helpful so far. Thank you for the tip, Irene, it definitely helped me move from 3% to 7%.

I am so glad it was helpful. When I was on Meropenem IV I read that you need to supplement with Vitamin K. I guess it depletes it. So I started taking two and have just continued with that but one is probably enough. I do not take MK7 because it gave me insomnia.
