What is Kidney disease?

Posted by neigenfindk @neigenfindk, Sep 10, 2024

My Egfr is 36 and my 3 doctors all say "You do not have kidney disease" They say that is normal for my age (79). Can't get into Nephrologist for 3 months. Primary. Cardiologist, and Endocrinologist. Is that normal?

36 is stage 3B. Perhaps your doctors said you do not have kidney failure-? You do have kidney disease. My eGFR is similar to yours though it fluctuates with more hydration. I have found that the eGFR bases on Cystatin C is higher than the creatinine based eGFR normally done. Maybe you could have the Cystatin C done. It is less affected by hydration, muscle loss and other factors. To be honest, I don't worry too much about my stage 3 but avoid NSAID's, other meds and supplements that might affect kidneys. I try to drink more water!

Here is an article on stage 3 a and b with an excerpt:
https://www.healthline.com/health/stage-3-kidney-disease
Stage 3 CKD has two subtypes based on eGFR readings:
Stage 3a: This stage indicates an eGFR between 45 and 59.
Stage 3b: This stage indicates an eGFR between 30 and 44.
The goal with stage 3 CKD is to prevent further kidney function loss. In clinical terms, this can mean preventing an eGFR between 29 and 15, indicating stage 4 CKD.
