What is bunion surgery and recovery like?

Posted by tkrfail21 @tkrfail21, 5 days ago

I have inherited the tendency to have a bunion only on one foot. The bunion itself does not hurt, but it is apparently pinching nerves, running up the surface of my foot toward my ankle. I have sharp pains even at night when i'm sleeping. Can anyone share and shed some light on what bunion surgery and recovery is like? I have heard the whole process can be incredibly painful.

I had surgery in. 2020. The recovery was a little rough. It took about a week before I could venture upstairs to get a bath. My surgeon said he would not do the second foot until it was needed as he could not guarantee it would eliminate pain—which I DID NOT have in the second foot. I used a walker while casted and wrapped with my husband behind me to assure I didnt fall, which almost happened a couple times. Then into a walking boot and it was all good from there. I had an excellent surgeon in Columbus, Ohio.

@gmarosie Great photos! What a change for the good! Interesting - my scar is on the top of my foot. This is a bit graphic before and after. Did you get your left foot done eventually?

I think she must have had a good surgeon. She says staying off of it for two weeks is crucial. She advises lots of good movies and someone to order around.
I hope you have an easy time of it. Your knee surgery must have been terrible. Wow, five surgeries on your knee. Anyone would need those drugs.

@gently hi I had a tkr almost a year ago and have limited rom. May I ask why you have had additional surgeries? I’m desperate to regain rom. Thank you

@nobend
I read the post about five knee surgeries, but can't find whoever wrote it.
You can regain rom with physical therapy even years after surgery. First though, you might have the knee reimaged to be sure that there weren't surgical errors, hardware failure or scar tissue adhesions.
It is possible that you'd need revision surgery. Sometimes patients are even given the wrong size implant, or imprecise placement.
Did you have good range of motion at any time after the surgery.

@babs10 No, have not had the left foot done. Makes finding shoes a little hard sometimes but I just buy “wide.”

@gently I had the 5 knee surgeries. The last was a revision due to scar tissue. The apparatus has never been the problem. I would love to have a other surgery to remove more scarring tissue but surgeon says will just cause more scar tissue. I swim laps and do all kinds of stretches and bends in the pool. 110 degrees bend but can't get more. Dr is pleased I have that much bend. Still always stiff.

tkrfail21, nobend was wondering about the five surgeries. They may be considering surgery to improve range of motion. Was your last arthroscopic arthrolysis. Was it a difficult recovery?
Did you have debridement or ligament repair before a later surgery. What was your range before surgery. I should let nobend ask. I think you have all the answers they are looking for. Thanks for your help.

If you are talking about my 5 knee surgeries I had very little bend but after revision9f scraping scar tissue and taking part of my patella I have 110. Dr said I would only get 70. Ever stop working to keep knee bending

@nobend 1st arthroscopic, 2nd tkr, 3rd manipulation, 4th revision to remove scar tissue (not the apparatus), 5th to remove 12 large sutures showing through my skin and painful. Knee is still stiff, bend 110, but doesn't hurt. Pes anserine bursae inflammation just below my knee was the initial problem. Because not addressed the pain was excruciating preventing me from bending my knee. Hence the scar tissue. I still occasionally have to get cortisone shots in the bursae. I blame the first surgeon who would not listen to me.
