I say that I wish I could say I am fine but I am in severe pain. That answer sorts out the ones that are just asking a rhetorical question from the ones that really want to know. I stick to my "honesty is the best policy" value.
My daily pain level is 6 to 8, sometimes approaching a 9. I have tried everything that I know to try. I am going for a morphine pain pump surgery next week. The trial went well, knocking my pain down to 2 or 3. I can live with that. Right now I tell folks who ask me how I'm doing, I tell them, "Just ducky".
