What incontinence products do you all advise?

Posted by quaddick @quaddick, 5 days ago

I'm scheduled for prostatectomy in 3 weeks and want your opinions on the best products for incontinence during the recovery process. I want to get some supplies ahead of time. Pads vs diapers, best brands, and where to buy advice would be appreciated. Also what sort of pants should I wear during recovery?
Thanks for your tips.

I can't imagine going weeks with one of those things. I'd need depends for 2 weeks after it was removed in that case.

I know they have different diameter catheters and I guess if somebody gets one that’s too small for them. It must leak around it. The one I had must’ve been big enough that it didn’t leak.

I had a catheter for 13 months without leakage. Mine was a size 18. (I'm 5 foot 4 inches and 135 pounds) I read so many guys hate their catheter. I could have gone the rest of my life with one if it wasn't for the monthly changes. I enjoyed sleeping through the night. Hadn't done that for 20 years with BPH.

After the catheter came out, which I had no problems, I was incontinent. I had RP surgery. I could sleep through the night with two trips to the bathroom. I could not stand wetting a pad and then wearing it and smelling it. I gave it through my recovery time and then moved to a condom catheter with a leg bag. I had to experiment with tubing and bags and condom sizes and brands. But I found a system that works. Six years later I am still using the same method. When I want a break from the condom then I use the clip. I just had my consultation with Mayo clinic for an AUS device.

great recommendations,
I would add
1. Tena products ( available on Amazon) come in levels so as things progress you can scale down
2 wear black pants in case of accidents

Off the rack depends might be a starting point as they are easy to find in the US. Look carefully at the waist sizes on the box as they can be misleading. I used heavier pads during the day and slept in Depends underwear at night. Within a few weeks I was able to switch to shields. Black pants for sure as they hide leaks better than light colors.

I’m puzzled. I never had any leaks from my catheter. Four days after surgery, I was at 3 clients offices, never had a problem. Seven days after I went to work full-time and I still have the catheter in for a full week. Never had any leakage. Did have to empty the bag.

I didn’t need to secure it. It was secured inside my clothes, at that time. I didn’t use any type of pad.

Is this a common problem others had?

@jeffmarc -- I had some leakage from the catheter. Not a lot, but enough to warrant wearing a pad.

Wow, thanks a lot, guys! I learned a lot of helpful tips. Never thought about the black pants or dog pads. I think I'll get one package of Depends briefs and some heavy pads. I also never thought of the brief underwear-I will definitely get a pack along with a couple of sweatpants as I don't own any. Good idea about the emergency pack in the car.
It took me a long time to decide between radiation or surgery, but now that I've made my decision, I'm eager to get it done and over with.
Thanks again.

I even wear black jeans. I do have some incontinence and it even gets my pants wet occasionally. Others can’t see it if my pants are black.

I can certainly recommend "Advance" incontinence products as being the best I have tried. Reasonable pricing too! Not sure if widely available in the US or not as I am in NZ.

I discovered one thing that I never thought about after my catheter was removed 11 days after surgery: The type of underwear that you normally wear will mostly determine "diaper vs pad", and here was why "for me":
I normally wore cotton boxers. Not the loose baggy type, but not the athletic kind that hug your thighs either. They were comfortably loose but not baggy in the least (brand: Tommy John cotton). Boxers do not allow comfortable or reliable use of a "pad". There isn't enough form-fitting material for the pad to attach to and "stay put" without seemingly want to fall out down your leg.
Because my incontinence was heavy - as yours will be for a while - I opted to wear a Depends diaper, and I wore a pair of my semi-loosely fitting boxers over that. But...once I was able to drive 3-4 weeks post-surgically (you won't "want" to before that due to surgical recovery), I got frustrated with the need to carry extra diapers. I would duck into the restroom wherever I was, and have to remove my shoes, my outer pants, and then my boxers and soaked diaper...then put on the new one, etc. So...I "thought" I'd be smart: I used a "pad" inside the diaper, so I could just do a quick change of pads in the restroom. That created a new problem until I accidentally did not have a pad with me, had revealed something. I was still so incontinent that I was going through lots of pads, but when I didn't have an extra one, I pulled out the wet pad, and carried on with just the diaper. I had no more leaks or floods! I then realized that the "pad" inside the diaper needed "space" to be there, so what it was doing was: the pad was pushing up on my perineum forcing pressure on my bladder to continually release any urine that was in the bladder. So my supposedly "genius" quick-change pad idea was actually making me pee more and use more pads. So, I went back to just the diaper and it was great. By then I was in that 75-85% fully continent phase of recovery. And...
I eventually got to the point that I only needed thing Depends "Shields"...no more diapers. BUT...the thin Depends Shields do not attach well to boxer shorts, nor stay in place to catch dribbles/leaks...the boxers move around enough that the pad would move out of position. So...
I invested in a whole new set of jockey shorts by the same Tommy John brand underwear. These jockey shorts go down your thigh 4 inches. They are between a boxer and a jockey with a little "give" and comfort. They were perfect for the Depends Shields...until my "infection." I was always meticulous about changing pads so my penis did not sit in a wet pad or diaper, and I cleaned up before putting in the new pad, so no urine was on my skin. What I didn't count on was that the unfamiliar jockey style underwear keep your penis and scrotum, up tighter against your warm body. One evening I felt that quick uncomfortable feeling like fabric from your underwear is caught between your leg and scrotum. I quickly adjusted and everything was fine, pr sop I thought. I went to bed as I always do without a diaper and in my old looser-fitting boxers. I fortunately do not leak while sleeping. But I awakened to a full-on skin infection on the underside of my penis and a little on the upper side of my scrotum. Balmex/Desitin did not make it go away, so on the evening of the second day of the infection I went to Urgent Care. The doctor said I likely have a yeast infection due to the slightly wet pads being held close to my warm body in the jockey style underwear. Despite changing pads within, at most, 10-15 minutes of even the slightest leak, I was now in unfamiliar territory. For the first time in 40 years I was wearing jockey underwear to accommodate secure placement of the thin Shields pad, but at the cost of creating a warm, moist environment for bacteria and yeast to take hold and flourish. "Nightmare." I had to take Epsom salts baths for 10 days (twice daily), plus an antibiotic and a one-time anti-fungal/yeast pill, AND apply Lotrimin to my penis and scrotum for those 10 days. It has finally gone away, but it was miserable.
Sorry...this was a very long-winded account of what "boxers" vs "jockey shorts" will create, and what "diapers" vs "pads" vs "shields" will create..."for me." Hopefully no one else has experienced this, but I can only imagine that someone out there has had a similar story. So, now...I wear my semi-loose boxers again with NO Shields pad. I just get up to pee every hour or so, and hope for the best. The most I have are nickel-/quarter-sized spots at times. I will eventually return to the newer 4" semi-jockey style underwear so I can wear a Shields pad, but "only if" I can remain infection-free down there. Good luck in your choices. They will start with what kind of underwear you currently use, and then go from there.
