What are your accommodation recommendations when coming to Mayo?

Posted by Jamie Olson @jamienolson, Mar 24, 2017

Here are links to hotel accommodations in all three Mayo locations:

Jacksonville: http://mayocl.in/2odKzVg
Rochester: http://mayocl.in/2nQ58el
Scottsdale/Phoenix area: http://mayocl.in/2nMeMyq

Where is your favorite place to stay when going to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Jacksonville or Scottsdale/Phoenix? Why?

Hopefully this account is still active, I have a question, if you don't book online, how else would you book? Just call them directly? New to this and I need to be there this Sunday. Thanks.

Hi @rnagle0322 Do you have a hotel in mind? It’s perfectly fine to call the hotel directly and schedule your room for however long you need to stay.
Have you gone online to look for lodging near the clinic?
Which Mayo campus will you be visiting?

Not sure on the bldg. my orders say Hilton, Gonda and Main OR over the course of my stay. I’ve seen several online just trying to determine which ones I should maybe stay away from. Thanks.

Ok, that tells me you’ll be in Rochester. All of those buildings are connected and very easily navigated once you’re inside. There’s super easy signage for directions and hundreds of Mayo Clinic volunteers in blue jackets to help you with any questions.
Ok, for lodging…do you know how long you’ll need to stay?
Do you want a room that has full kitchen or kitchenette? Do you want a hotel that has shuttle service?
Do you have a price range?

You can also call or chat with the concierge department at the Mayo Clinic. They’re very helpful in find a hotel to suite your needs.

Several hotels directly around the Clinic are connected via a tunnel called the Subway. Making it convenient so you don’t have to find parking.

Most hotels are pretty reputable as they cater to Mayo clientele. When you mention “hotels you need to avoid” is there any particular reason that’s worrisome?

We’ll be there four days total. Kitchenette not necessary. Shuttle would be great but also not required as we’re driving up. Kind of middle of the road as far as price. Just want a clean place with a comfortable bed and maybe bfast included. Saw that some charge for parking. I was surprised by that.

Parking is at a premium the closer you are to the clinic building so there is often a charge for parking. The room charge is steeper as well. That’s pretty normal in any city…the nearer the venue, the pricier the lodging.

Near the clinic, within easy walking distance, is the Hilton Garden Inn, the Kahler inn, Doubletree, Marriott Residence Inn, etc. We’ve always stayed nearby allowing us to walk so I don’t have first hand knowledge of hotels further out.
There may be other members popping in with ideas for you with their experiences at favorite hotels. Again, if you’re not sure of a hotel, contact the concierge with the information I posted earlier. It’s a free service and they’re super helpful.
I’ll look for some ideas for you.
Is your first appointment Monday Morning?

Yes, call hotel directly and ask about Mayo discount. Many hotels offer and the discount may not be available online.
If in Rochester and not staying downtown, ask if hotel provides shuttle.

Didn’t know that. Now that makes sense about not online. Thanks so much.

We like the Sleepin in North Scottsdale, which is actually closer to the hospital than the Scottsdale campus. They have a shuttle to the hospital but sign up early to get your desired time. We like it because it is close, the people are nice, and it has everything we need with no frills. And the afternoon cookies are good. We also like Fountain Hills which is close to the Scottsdale campus. It’s a little bit older but has been recently renovated. It has some nice areas to take a walk, and we can also walk to some restaurants.

I wish you all the best with your surgery and recovery. You’re in the best of hands with the medical teams at Mayo…I’m a bit biased but it’s an experience like no other! You’ll be well taken care of there. ☺️

A quick tip: With your appointments on Monday being pre-op testing, usually that means a trip to the lab for blood work first thing. The lab’s a busy place (Charlton lobby level Desk L-A) so plan on arriving 30 minutes early for that appointment because the wait can be long first thing in the morning. Especially nerve-wracking if you have another appointment to get to right after that. Once you’re registered in the lab however, if you see you’re going to be late for your next appointment, you can just leave and return to the lab later. You’re registered all day!

Don’t hesitate to pop in with any questions! And please let me know how you’re doing, ok?
