Weight loss with PMR

Posted by debdan8825 @debdan8825, 4 days ago

Since being dx with PMR 2 1/2 years ago I have lost weight, even on prednisone. I was on prednisone for 18 months, losing about a half pound a month. When I went off prednisone I have been losing one to two pounds a month. I'd this normal? I know most people gain while on prednisone but I was so fatigued and no appetite. Just wondered if anyone else has experienced the ongoing weight loss. I have been symptom free since last Aug but really never got my appetite back.

Have you switched to an anti-inflammatory diet? Weight loss and loss of appetitie is a symptom of PMR. I lost weight too and I didn't have a lot to spare. Now, I'm down to 1 mg a day but while eating healthy, it's tough to put the weight back on.

I have gained 10-15 pounds but I think most of that is since I have been tapering down on prednisone. My activity level is decreasing during my taper but I don't have a choice because I was diagnosed with SMM in May. I was eating better and less when I felt good on 25mg but now at 9mg I'm being careful not to aggravate my shoulders and hip girdle in order to keep the returning PMR pain within mild to moderate levels.

@cyndiefromnc ,
No, I am not on any anti-inflammatory diet. I was probably 20 lbs overweight before getting PMR and I have lost that and then some without even trying. My doctor was concerned when I lost 8 lbs in 3 months. I just dont have much of an appetite even after the flare was gone.

This is the second time for me being diagnosed with PMR. Problem was that unlike the first time, I was feeling much worse and losing weight. I switched doctors and she found I have a fatty liver (funny being 118 lbs), as well as a sludgy gallbladder. Has your doctor done a good blood panel? There may be an underlying problem. At this rate, I have iron deficient anemia even after many iron infusions and malnourished even though I eat healthy etc.
I would see your doctor again.

Hello all. My PMR dx was early October 2025. I lost 6 lbs, from 112 to 106 in 3-4 months. I was on 10 mg pred until my GCA dx in February. Then pred went up to 40 mg for 8 weeks until I began Tyenne self injections in April. I have gained 3 lbs back and am rocking along on my now 4mg pred. My healthy eating habits didn't change but, initially my appetite was diminished. I attributed the loss of appetite and weight loss to the roaring inflammation in my body. Severe or chronic inflammation speeds up metabolism resulting in muscle wasting and can cause weight loss.
Hopefully, in time, you can regain the weight you want and need.

I was diagnosed with PMR this past March. Just tapered down to 10mg prednisone today,from starting at 20mg in April. My inflammatory markers were sky high but went back down to normal in May. Question: Has anyone else tried any supplements that reduce inflammation? I've been taking 1000mg of amla every day and I'm in no pain and can work and do whatever I want ( with the exception of the brain fog and depression) I'm hoping that I can get on the prednisone exit ramp sooner if I am taking this. My doctor isn't thrilled but didn't discourage it either. I just don't like any of the options they are offering me. I see the rheumatologist next week.

@mp71 I use turmeric (curcumin) ginger and black pepper to tamp down inflammation.

I was diagnosed in April with pmr. I am on 15mg of prednisone daily. My appetite is way too good. I’ve decided to diet but need to determine how many oz of protein I need in a day.
