How did you wean off Metoprolol?
Hi,
I've been taking both flecainide and metoprolol now for eight years, as a prophylactic for Afib. I recently moved to North Carolina and have a new Cardiologist. Have had a lot of PVC's this past two months, and had to wear a heart monitor for an entire month. He said that although I had a lot of PVC's I didn't have even one PAC! He also noted that my BPM was low in the low fifties most of the time. He asked why I was taking metropolol. I told him that the only thing my previous doctor had said was " it makes the flecainide, work better". He suggested I stop taking the metoprolol to see how I do without it. Unfortunately I read a lot of information on the internet. I read that it can be very dangerous to stop taking it. I take 25 mg metoprolol succinate, split in half. Once in the morning with my flecainide, and then again in the evening for a second dose. He wants me to take half in the morning and skip the evening dose for two days, then stop entirely. Has anyone else stopped taking this drug in a similar manner? I'm worried that the cut off is too soon.

I only took the drug for a month & had some terrible side effects. I did like you cut the pill in half & weened off it.
I took metropolol for a few years until i discovered it was giving me rash breakouts. When I informed my cardio doc he switched me to carvedolol. That seems to be working fine with no outbreaks so far.
Good luck. It gets so confusing. I'm on metoprol also. I've given up weining off of it, cause I feel much better when on my dosage. There are annoying side effects such as low libido and little energy or interest in doing anything, this also goes along with the covid life style etc. I told my dear cardiology team at Scottsdale Mayo Clinic 3 years ago, that I didn't want an ablation since the idea of it scared me. Instead we did three cardioversions that didn't hold, they usually don't. Put on .....heart med who's name I've forgotten...that worked for about a year until Christmas and the holiday stress just slammed me out of rhythm and I gave it up. Then metoprol was recommended to slow the heart rate and see how I felt. By this time I was living in Carson City Nv and no longer a patient at the Mayo Clinic, though my cardiology said, if you need something major done, your going back to the Mayo, right? Decided then I'd keep it together with low salt and sugar, no caffaine (except alittle dark choc, I mean alittle). This helped. Also I study Christian Science and practiced affirmations of health and prayer, and this helped. Also received theraputic massage weekly, love this. Anyway, have improved alot. Maybe there is something better for me, but I'm exhausted by the process. At my lowest point 6/16, was in serious heart failure. Now just afib with leaky heart valves. I'm 73 and live with my husband, daughter and one granddaughter.
I was on metoprolol Er 25 mg for about 3 months. My ep then lowered it to 12.5 and now I split that. How long do the side effects last for? I’ve been weaning for about a month now and it is still kicking my butt. Get lightheaded, nausea, been to the ER with tachycardia and they do the normal tests and all come back normal. Scheduled for an ablation on March 5 th to take care of this and the PVCs I’m having. Any help is greatly appreciated!!! I’m also on flecainide and losartan. Just need to get off all of these horrible medications!
100 percent ! It crippled me like I suddenly had major arthritis. It was unbelievable pain . I did physio and had X-rays showing some moderate arthritis in my left hip. I experienced other side effects and on 12.5 mg once a day. I went off it and within 2 days I was pain free no word of a lie. Metoprolol for me was a drug full of side effects that no one would believe I was experiencing as it’s a low dose. So not true!!
I was told by both a pharmacist and my cardiologist that you cant stop metoprolol cold turkey. You must be weaned off it. Can trigger serious heart problems just stopping.
I took it too, but was suffering from rashes. My doc changed it to carvedelol. which seems to be okay.
Since met lowers your heart rate, makes sense to leave it.
Good luck with your issues. Hard time to be ill.
I am on metoprolol succ.150/twice daily. I have HCM w/obstruction. I am 67 & too scared to have the surgery. After reading comments here, I’m seriously reconsidering.
